Backup procedure:
1. open SQL Server Enterprise Manager
2. find the database i want to backup
3. right click and select "All Tasks"-"Backup Databse..."
4. Select "destinatio n"-"backup to"-->>"Tape"
5. Click "Add", Select "Tape" device name(or may address)"\\.\Ta pe0"
6. Click "OK" begin to backup
Error:
system prompt:
The file on device '\\.\Tape0' is not a valid Microsoft Tape Format
backup set. BACKUP DATABSE is terminating abormally.
On this SAME server, using the same TAPE, but USE Tapeware(a HP backup
software come with HP tape machine) to back file, everything is OK.
I don't have any clue about this. am new to Windwos, new to SQL
server. Any body could show me light? Thanks in advance.

Perhaps the tape needs to be formatted because it was previously used by
Tapeware. Select the 'overwrite existing media' and, under the options tab,
select 'initialize and label media.

yah, I do formatted the tape use Tapeware with successfully. But SQL
Server backup with the same error. Maybe I need other software to format
the tape. The tape format which is formatted by other software may not
recognizable by SQL Server 2000.

Did you specify 'initialize' so that the tape is formatted during the SQL
Server backup? This will ensure the tape is in the Microsoft Tape Format
required by SQL Server backup.

SQL Server requires MTF so it appears Tapeware doesn't use that format.

You should still be doing the backup to disk and then a normal backup
from disk to tape.

The company I work for has been running Access 2000 on a Windows NT
server with Opportunistic Locking turned off on the server without
issue for almost a year. We have just switched to a Windows 2000 file
server with service pack 3 installed and are now experiencing at least

- I can make a DB2 backup to a filesystem and it works fine. (e.g.
backup into /tmp/test)
- And I can also tar the created file into a 3590 tape drive and it
works fine too. (e.g. tar into /dev/rtibm0 )

Can not open mssql .bak file in ms_sql. File starts with "ti" and some
