Data Table Column Order

1 New Member
I am attempting to use triggers to add some simple auditing to my database structure (SQL Server 2005). I am running an ASP with this so I have many databases (dozens) with identical structure. My problem is that as we create new databases and tables, we have never paid attention to column ordering. Who cares right? Well triggers seem to care if you need it to key off a change in a specific column in a specific data table. I do not see any option other than to reference the columns ordinally. If the column order is different from datatable to datatable even though the column are the same, I am screwwed. I will need custom triggers for each database and then I am better off writing code. That has more overhead than I want to introduce though.

The question is: Is there a way to get a trigger to fire off an update on a column name rather than it's ordinal location in the table. If not is there a way via SQL script I can force column ordering? That seems silly to have to do and will make adding fields later a bear. Are triggers just not fully developed? Ordinal referencing is dangerous in my case.

Hi there, I have an application that rips data from an SQL server and displays it in columnar form on an ASP page, using a Do until RS.EOF loop. I wish to add 2 arrows to each column (up and down) and when clicked, orders the data on the page by that column (up - A-Z and down Z-A etc.....) Is this possible in ASP or would i need some Javascript/Client side code to do this?

Sorry about the huge post, but I think this is the amount of information necessary for someone to help me with a good answer. I'm writing a statistical analysis program in ASP.net and MSSQL7 that analyzes data that I've collected from my business's webpage and the hits it's collecting from the various pay-per-click (PPC) engines. I've arrived at problems writing a SQL call to generate certain statistics. Whenever someone enters our...

I'm working on a system right now where I have a database (two, actually, but one is discarded halfway through), but it's created and used as part of a process (reporting), rather than as the actual production data repository. I may be keeping the database permanantly, but it would be completely read-only; once the process is complete, the database will not change again. This has me wanting to do a few things that are rather foreign to...

This is a rather abstract question about data design, but I ask it here because a) the database is SQL Server, and b) you're such a learned bunch! Let's assume the classic relation of Customers and Orders, where an Order may reference a single Customer. If I was designing such a relation from scratch, I would create the Customer table with an Identity column and call it CustomerID. The Order table would contain a column called...

What is the better table design for a data collection application. 1. Vertical model (pk, attributeName, AttributeValue) 2. Custom columns (pk, custom1, custom2, custom3...custom50) Since the data elements collected may change year over year, which model better takes of this column dynamicness

I scoured the groups for some hands on code to perform the menial task of exporting table data from an Access 2000 database to Oracle database (in this case, it was oracle 8i but i'm assuming this will work for 9i and even 10g ) No one had what I needed, so I wrote it myself. I Rule. This code isn't going for efficiency, and isn't trying to be dynamic. It doesn't create the table structure in Oracle, that's up to you. (I

Evening chaps I'm after a bit of advice, I've written a data tier using attributes, reflection and inheritance, to test it I've written a simple order entry program. Glad I did as it picked up many flaws, but as you may be aware as soon as reflection is used things start slowing down, can anyone advise on a decent test scenario. I could create a table with 30 fields, create say 1000 records, create another table with a 1:m...

I have pasted below the script that I am using. I will appreciate if someone can give me a clue as how to sort data in ascending or descending order when displaying on the page.

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
