SQL 2000 Text Field Problem

3 New Member
I am having problems updating a text field with a very large string.

If I build a string in code using a string variable and then update 1 row I have no problem. However, I want to run an update statement that hits many rows. When I run the stored proc that does this my string is being truncated near 3,800 characters.

Here's an example of what I'm trying to do.
BigString is a TEXT field.

Update Table1
Set BigString = 'blah, blah, blah ' + Table1.Field1 + ' blah, blah, blah ' + Table2.Field1, etc..
From Table1 Inner Join Table2 On ....

My guess is because the actual string builds on the fly that SQL engine stores it in some temporary nVarChar like structure and it runs out of space.

Any possible work arounds or solutions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am trying to write some code that inserts or updates a text field in my SQL Server 2000 database. The SQL statement is created using a submit from a form, and the text is coming from a <textarea>, and therefore being placed into the SQL statement via a Request("field"). However, due to limitations in SQL Server 2000 and text fields, I can not use a simple Update or Insert command with text over 8000 bytes. Does anybody have any...

Getting really stumped here..... Using Classic.ASP and after an editing page has been completed I need to write the values back to an Access 2000 database. But I'm battling with a checkbox resultwhich has to be stored in aYes/No field. I'm testing the variable no_mail to see if it returns "on" in ASP which means the checkbox is ticked. I then load a variable called sql_val_no_mail with the text that the SCP statement will use to...

Hi All, I'm having a problem trying to add a record to a simple Access 2000 db (db is very similar to an address book but with more info than the usual address, phone, etc.). The database is one table, 36 fields. The record_id field is an autonumber field (long int) and primary key. The rest of the fields comprise of 30 text fields, 3 memo fields, 1 date field and 1 currency field. Text fields vary in number of characters allowed. ...

In Access 2000 and 2002, I have created an import specification to import the fixed-width recordset below into an existing table. We recently upgraded some of our department's machines from WINNT to Windows 2000. Up until this point, we were running Access 2000 on WINNT and had no problems with our databases. After the upgrade, we have users running Win2000 and Access 2000. Here's a brief description of the problem. 1. I have a main form that loads when the application is launched. It contains a list box that queries for two columns from a table: an id number...

I have a very simple db I use for keeping track of hours, tasks, projects, clients etc. It has a form that I use to enter data. Currently the form has a textbox for a field called "start time", another for a field called "end time" and a third for a field called "hours", among other controls. I now type in the approximate times in the first two textboxes, and mentally calculate and enter the difference or elapsed time in the third. I...

Hello! I'm writing about a rather peculiar problem I'm having with Access2000. I have a table in which I have created one hyperlink-type field. I have given the field a default value which is an email-address. The default value is (for example): "mailto:mymail@here.com". Access2000 correctly inserts that information into the field everytime

Hi - my problem is as follows: I'm writing an ASP.Net 2.0 app with C#. From the app, I call a stored procedure that updates some data in the app's database (SQL Server 2000). This stored procedure then declares and assigns a value to a variable of type nvarchar(4000) and calls a 2nd stored procedure, passing it, among other things, the newly created variable. The 2nd stored procedure performs some updates to a different SQL Server 2000...

Following on from an earlier post... I can reliably corrupt a record by doing the following ... Open two separate but identical front ends on one PC each linking to the same back end. Edit a records in one front end and leave it unsaved. Edit the same record in the other front end and save the change. Save the change in the first front end - this pops up the Write Conflict message to which I click Save.

Hello, Thank you in advance for any assistance. I am trying to set up a mail merge from VB6/VBA code with Word 2000 using an ODBC data source (SQL 2000). I have successfully gotten the connection working using both a file dsn and a machine dsn. I am currently using a simple test merge template with fields <<FirstName>> (a nvarchar) <<Id>> (an int primary key).....plus a <<NextRecord>> field. The template doc itself has no data source...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
