Pattern for error checking easiest-first?

Heres the situation:

class AbstractThing() :
def changeMe(self,b lah):
if blah < 1:
raise MyException
self.blah = blah

class NetworkedThing( AbstractThing):
def changeMe(self,b lah):
if blah self.getUpperLi mitOverTheNetwo rkSlowly:
raise MyOtherExceptio n
AbstractThing.c hangeMe(self,bl ah)
The problem is that code like this does error checking backwards. A
call to NetworkedThing. changeMe will first do a slow error check and
then a fast one. Obviously there are various ways to get around this -
either have the subclass explicitly ask the superclass to error check
first, or vice totally versa. Is there some accepted pattern/idiom for
handling this issue?

What about this:

class AbstractThing() :
def changeMe(self,b lah):
self.verify_bla h(blah)
self.blah = blah

def verify_blah(sel f, blah):
if blah < 1:
raise MyException

class NetworkedThing( AbstractThing):
def verify_blah(sel f, blah):
AbstractThing.v erify_blah(blah )
if blah self.getUpperLi mitOverTheNetwo rkSlowly:
raise MyOtherExceptio n

That is, it's the verify step that is overriden/enhanced, not the
changeMe method that stays the same.

I've got my starting point using setw and don't want to use cout for every line of display. What should i be looking for to use. Thanks

Hi, I'm writing a data layer for an app my company is developing. I'm thinking about wrapping up the basic data access object in two decorator objects: one to provide error checking on parameters, and one to provide generic logging of exceptions. Is that a good idea or not? It adds some indirection, but at the same time the code becomes less cluttered. And the decor can even be "peeled" off at a later time if considered superfluous. ...

New on November 29, 2005 for www.FluffyCat.com PHP 5 Design Pattern Examples - the Command Pattern. Since you all enjoyed the Visitor Pattern so much yesterday, today I have the Command Pattern for you. This one is pretty straight forward. In the Command Pattern an object encapsulates everything needed to execute a method in another object. http://www.fluffycat.com/SDCMSv2/PHP-Design-Patterns-Command/

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
