books: Dive into Python vs Beginning Python

Hi,

which of the following books would you recommend:
"Dive into Python" or "Beginning Python: From Novice to Professional"?

I'm an experienced C++-programmer who wants to take a look at Python.

Thanks,
Franz

I can't recommand the second since I've never read it. But you can
freely make your own opinion on the first, since it's freely available
online.

I'm an experienced C++-programmer who wants to take a look at Python.

Then I'd say that Dive into Python may be a good choice.

Welcome BTW

Another option: just use the on-line tutorial at python.org

Both are very good books but I suggest the latter because more recent.
Beginning Python talk python 2.3 and 2.4 : set data structure,
generator, iterator...

"Dive into Python" actually mentions generators :

And it's a very well written book btw.

I would recommend both, but as i have already bought the first version
of Beginning Python known as Practical Python by Magnus. I can
gaurantee you that the practical projects as well as the succinct
python tutorial in the book will show you the full power and glory of
Python. Magnus is a great author, believe me!

Since "Dive into Python" is on the net, you can see for yourself if it's
any good (which I think it is!)

I love reading books on Python and have almost all of them. However, it seems that there aren't any new ones currently being written that aren't for beginners. Does anyone know of any plans for future Python books that cover specific topics like wxPython or mod_python (like O'reilly's mod_perl and also their book on PerlTk). Thanks. Ryan Kaskel

Hi all. I'm fairly new to programming and I thought I'd like to try Python. I'm trying to decide between these two books: Learning Python (O'Reilly) Beginning Python: From Novice to Professional (APress) and I was hoping you might have some suggestions. LP seems to be a good intro, but the other was published only a month ago and covers 2.4. So one question would be, is 2.2 different enough from 2.4 to warrant getting the newer book...

While I work at a company that uses Python a lot (and would have had a hard time finding such a place a few years ago) I don't really have a clear opinion on whether Python's marketshare (or mindshare) is growing significantly. Perl seems to be in decline, but on the other hand, Ruby is attracting a lot of people. One interesting thing I noticed when I visited Amazon.com today, was that several publishers are busy making new editions of...

I have been getting ready to learn programming for a long time, installed a GNU/Linux operating system, learnt the ins and outs but I think it is time to pick up a book and learn to now program. I have never actually programmed before only dabbed into XHTML so do take it in mind that I need a book that could slowly progress me into the fundamentals of programming. I chose Python as my first programming language from hearing the praise...

I started reading the beginning Python book. It is intended for people who are starting out in the Python world. But it is really complicated, because he tries to explain, then after a bad explanation he puts out a bad example. I really recommend NOT reading the book. For it will make you want not to continue in Python. This is just me letting the air out of my lungs. No need to reply this is just a recommendation. Txs for the opportunity .

Hi, I'm a C++, Java and C programmer, and I'm searching for a (preferably printed) book that teaches me the "Python idioms", i.e. the "Python way" of doing something. Ideally, I'm searching for a book like "Effective C++" or "Effective Java", that does not lose time teaching what is a class, or a function, or a loop, but that enters into details and describes not only the "how", but also the "why".

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
