I need to write a tiny little program which makes use of an Oracle database
on Solaris. Just a single SQL statement. Nice and simple.
Coming from a Windows/SQLServer/ADO background, I'm having a bit of trouble
finding some of the basics.
Given that I already have Oracle and Python installed on the Solaris box,
what else do I need?
A little code snippet would be very handy.

Hi all,
I need to access an Oracle database through a python script using ODBC
drivers(currently i have eval copies of Easysoft and datadirect Oracle
ODBC drivers).
Desired platforms are solaris, linux.
Is there any support in the python to do this or will i have to resort
to a c/c++ program becuase python for UNIX doesn't support this.
any pointers will be appriciated.

I'm getting my feet wet with making Python talk to MySQL via ODBC. I
started on Windows, and it went smoothly enough due to the ODBC stuff
that apparently is native to Python at least on windows (I've been
following ch. 13 of Mark Hammond's py on win32 book).
But now I'm trying to do equivalent stuff on linux (Fedora Core 3) with
python 2.3.5 and mysql. I'd like to stick with packages that are

I'm fairly new to Python so please pardon any dumbness on my part.
I plan to write an app in Python that will run on Linux and would need
to connect to Oracle and MySQL. I could use MySQLdb for MySQL and
cx_oracle for Oracle, but 2 different APIs in the same app is kind of

I am trying to use Python to do queries on a Oracle database using a
Solaris box. I have seen tools such as cx_Oracle which would be good
except that my Solaris box does not have an Oracle installation. Do I
need to have an Oracle installation on my Solaris box to access the
Oracle database (which is on another machine)? Are there ways to access
an Oracle database and do queries without having a local copy of Oracle
installed? Thanks.

I was messing around with the native ODBC module (I am using Python in
a Win32 environment), e.g:
import dbi, odbc
....and it seems to meet my needs. I'd rather use a module that comes
natively with Python if it works (don't care about performance in this
particular use case; just that it works).
