I'm reading a lot of talks lately about the term iFrame and with your
permission would like to ask a few question about that :
- what is iFrame, i mean what is it good for ?
- does all the popular browsers support it (mostly mozilla & the much
hated IE, google says the do but nothing is better that experienced answer)
- iFrames replaces the old frames once used in html to show a number of
pages in a single windows, right ?
- what are common uses of iFrames ?
- mostly importantly does php support iFrames & if so how?, will i need
to use PEAR for that ?

Frames split your windows in multiple parts.
Let says you want an left side menu, with frames your menu will be in one

It's an inline frame. Useful for providing frames that are embedded
in a regular page.

Everything upwards of Netscape4/IE4 will support them. Unless
you're visually impaired of course.

The IFRAME element allows authors to insert a frame within a block
of text. Inserting an inline frame within a section of text is much
like inserting an object via the OBJECT element: they both allow you
to insert an HTML document in the middle of another, they may both
be aligned with surrounding text, etc.

(and fixed) space on a page. For example, you may want to put
news headings into a fixed-size iframe on your home page.

scrolling="auto "></IFRAME>
This will define a 400 by 200 iframe, which will display the
output of news.php and a scroll bar, if that output would not
fit into the 400 by 200 area.

There is no need for PHP to "support iFrames"; PHP is not a browser.

It IS useful, as mentioned a news page oder something like that.
Imagine, you designed a small template 500 pixels height and 500
pixels width and want to display it in a popup window, without
scrollbars.. Then you can use an iFrame to display the news and have
the scrollbar directly next to the news...
Another possibility: you only have html and not php oder don't want to
use it, then you can use an iframe to include a html oder php-site..
professional developers don't use iframes much, but when a
web-beginner comes to me, i often suggest to use that. another
example: They are very happy, when they signed up for a free (ad
sponsord :[ ) guestbook, but they have to open it in a new window...
Ok, with iframes they can create a page and put that geustbook
"inline" with an iFrame (inline-frame)...

To a good extent, yes. Many web designers prefer iframe over regular frames

the browser's back and forward buttons. When clicked, can it be made
to affect any history NOT in the iframes. Therefore only going
backwards and forwards through the pages history; leaving the iframes
as they are.

I needed to implement a "page within a page" and rather than use frames
(yecchh)
decided to try using the object tag. Flung a test page together, tried it
out in IE
and Firefox on my PC, it worked perfectly (apart from the right hand
scrollbar
in IE). Picked up the page to be inserted (
http://sms.connexus.co.nz/sst/default.asp)
and displayed it exactly as I hoped in both browsers. Great!
