I have a big pile of files on my local machine that are in a variety of
formats - txt, rtf, pdf, html, etc. What I'm looking for is a script
that will crawl through the files and perform simple full-text indexing
on them, and will allow for queries to be executed on the index.
I gave PHPDig a shot but it prefers web-based setups - my files are all
stored locally and will only be accessed locally.
Any recommendations ?

Or get a copy of Mac OS X.
The spotlight facility to search for / through files is pretty
impressive - well compared to what you may be used to on Windows.

Caucho Resin 2.1.12, on RHEL3 with Sun JDK 1.4.2_04, modest number of
threads, serving approx 50-150 requests per second.

The facts:
PostgreSQL 7.4.0 running on BSD 5.1 on Dell 2650 with 4GB RAM, 5 SCSI
drives in hardware RAID 0 configuration. Database size with indexes is
currently 122GB. DB size before we completed the vacuum full was 150GB.
We have recently done a major update to a table, f_pageviews, in our
