Starting PHP, netequite question

Hi All,

I am learning php an I am amazed how easy a PHP noob like me can acheive
so much in little time.

I am planning to take part in the community and noticed these 3 newsgroups :

-alt.comp.lang.p hp
-comp.lang.php
-alt.php

Do these groups differ in purpose or is it allowed to crosspost in all 3
of these?

My guess is that my newsserver gets access to these 3 ones but other people
maybe can read only 1.

Cheers,
Tom Pester

comp.lang.php is probably the only you need. This group is fairly
active. Other than the real obscure ones, most questions are answered
within the same day.

As for crossposting, I think it depends on the post. If you're
expressing an opinion, then crossposting to relevant groups is
appropriate. If you're asking a question, then it annoys people. After
all, you don't need the whole world's help. Asking questions without
googling the group first is annoying too.

someone just to find out his question has already been solved in other
group is not pleasant. This is not like payed support, you know: we
do it for fun.

Theres alwas some cunt looking to make his name in the NG who will post an
answer... The tossers that spam dent me are at the end of the day not worth
listening too anyway.

You do it for fun??? you do it to ride higher up the NG status list and get
your name recognised !!!

You are describing multi-posting, not cross-posting. Are you aware of
the difference

There isn't much difference when message is sent to groups you aren't
subscribed to: you won't know if there're other answers. That's what I
meant.

Which is not the case with cross-posting.
With cross-posting you'll see the answers from those groups too.

I see you use the same news reader than me. What are your settings? My copy
doesn't show messages from group A in group B, even if group A exists in my
news server.

Maybe cause you didn't crosspost?
My settings are so that if I am subscribed to 4 newsgroups, and there
is a crosspost to 5 newsgroups, of which 3 in my list, and 2 not in my
list, I will see the message in the first of those 3, and only the
header (marked read) in the other 2 of those 3. If someone in a group
that is not in my list responds to the post, I will see it in the
first group I read.

I see it happen all the time. Posts from people I've never heard of,
and looking at the headers I see a bunch of groups I never read.

Maybe you have Dialog configured to block/mark read all crossposts?

BTW - how would you know from which group I am posting?
I don't know if you're reading in alt.php, or comp.lang.php.

comp.lang.php only. I've reviewed the "General settings" but I just can't
find anything about crossposting (I'm using beta 38).

I've created a score rule to tag crossposts but now I realize it isn't
working in my work computer (same rule works fine at home!):
[*]
-10 Xpost %>1

It's probably time to reinstall xD

Please forgive me, I'm sleepy most of the time.

Pretty often, replies to crossposted messages are not sent to all the
groups but only one. I'm not sure but I believe that's what netiquette
recommends (that's why there's a "Followup-To" header).

So John Smith asks a question in alt.foo.a, alt.foo.b and alt.foo.c with
"Followup-To: alt.foo.a". I'm only subscribed to alt.foo.c and see the
question remains unanswered so I spend ten minutes trying to help. But it
happens there's already a 30 messages thread in alt.foo.a with lots of
helpful info. That's my concern. I did a terrible work trying to explain
myself, sorry.

Whatever, I believe Usenet is quite a nice place to be (compare it to
IRC!). Common sense and killfiles make it possible :)

Ah yes, I get your point now.

So John Smith asks a question in alt.foo.a, alt.foo.b and alt.foo.c with
"Followup-To: alt.foo.a". I'm only subscribed to alt.foo.c and see the

NP, I'm getting your drift perfectly now. (I think!)
When a follow-up is set though, it should be mentioned in the body of
the message. Secret follow-ups are a PITA, indeed.

If you are the one crossposting the message, yes, it's best to set a
follow-up, but if you want ongoing exchange of information from more
than one group, I'd say feel free to mention that you don't want a
follow-up set.
Whatever, I believe Usenet is quite a nice place to be (compare it to
IRC!). Common sense and killfiles make it possible :)

Very true :-)

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
