Starting PHP, netequite question

Hi All,

I am learning php an I am amazed how easy a PHP noob like me can acheive
so much in little time.

I am planning to take part in the community and noticed these 3 newsgroups :

-alt.comp.lang.p hp
-comp.lang.php
-alt.php

Do these groups differ in purpose or is it allowed to crosspost in all 3
of these?

My guess is that my newsserver gets access to these 3 ones but other people
maybe can read only 1.

Cheers,
Tom Pester

comp.lang.php is the "official" PHP newsgroup, and supersedes the alt.* groups
which were created first. It also has the most traffic.

Most servers automatically add all the "Big-8" groups which includes all of
comp.* - coverage for alt.* groups tends to be less complete.

There may be some people who can't read the comp.lang.php group but that is
probably less likely than people not being able to read the alt.* groups. It's
preferable to just stick to comp.lang.php.

Why should you care? Just post your question to all three. You will get
differing responses and experiences from all of them and from those answers
you will get more and better idea's,thoughts

I'm going to be flamed for that but it honestly does speed up the process of
getting an answer you need quick. so sorry about the netiquette rule, but I
rarely follow them and that is not cos of my arrogance, it is because I
assume people do not surf all three (even though I know some do)

Somebody give me a good reason why I should follow netiquette and I may well
start to give it respect.

Sorry , but its the truth.

What the hell are you talking about? What part of "netiquette " are you
referring to? It's not a violation to cross-post to more than one
applicable group.

Why care? Because group members will simply ignore your questions if
they're a waste of time (or even if don't like your face). Answering
someone just to find out his question has already been solved in other
group is not pleasant. This is not like payed support, you know: we do it
for fun.

You'll be flamed by one or two and silently added to plonk file by some
other dozen people. If you believe that speeds up things feel free to go
ahead :)

But is it approropriate on the 3 newsgroups mentioned?

If there was a
- php.databases
- php.beginners
- php.windowsSpec ifig

And a beginner crosspost a starter question here I woul understand this is
frawned upon.

But the 3 php groups
-alt.comp.lang.p hp
-comp.lang.php
-alt.php

have the exact same purpose and they are in existance cause not all people
can get them.

Mabye its time to merge these groups into 1 cause I think they are here for
historical reasons.

For now how do you decide where to post a php question?

Well, that person was wrong. I vaguely remember a discussion about that
here, I don't recall if it was the same one. Crossposting (rarely) is
ok, multi-posting is bad.

You are describing multi-posting, not cross-posting. Are you aware of
the difference?

It would be rare that someone could get the alt groups but not the
comp.lang one. Possible I suppose, but highly unlikely.

There's really no mechanism for "merging" newsgroups. The others will
exist for a long time. The landscape is littered with defunct alt
groups, it's the nature of that beast.
For now how do you decide where to post a php question?

I'd say here. It's high traffic and good signal to noise.
