I can't believe how many people don't realize how many of their questions are answered in the PHP/MySQL/Apache documentation!

'nuff said. Just venting...

I've found the same on numerous forums, and I attribute it to pure
lazyness: They think it is easier to ask someone than to RTFM. At first,
I just told those people to "RTFM", but that got me lots of flames for
being rude, so now I just sit on my hands, count to ten, them move on to
the next post.

Same here, so most of the time I will send a link to the correct manual
pages. That way the next person that has a very similar question may
check out the llink first. Besides, when you know the manuals from
reading them so much, you tend to be able to find things that others
can't because of the terms they are looking for...

Granted, quite often it is lazyness, but it's not always that simple.
First you have to know there is a manual, then you have to find it, and
then you have to find out which part of the manual answers your
question. This last part is sometimes still a problem for me.

True enough! Take Unix man pages, for example....hard to read, difficult
to find what exactly you are looking for, and impossible to use as a
learning tool!

I have one word for newbies: google!

Earlier some guy asked about php and ms access. I did a google
search: php microsoft access

Behold the first hit was a tutorial on PHP with Microsoft Access on
phpfreaks.com.

I still think too many people don't life a finger. I learned
everything on my own through books, bad web tutorials and writing code
and trying things out.

Considering that most people using PHP are dabbling, it does not
surprise me.

I am a professional programmer and find that MOST of my colleagues do
not RTFM so the fact that non-pro's don't either is hardly surprising.
Especially the newer, younger people.

Me, I find I usually get more accurate answers from the manual than the
so-called experts. The only exception is getting the nuance of a
function that may not be covered by a technical manual. IE: How/when to
use a function and which might be better if there are alternatives.

With you on that one!

Once I get the time, I'm going to put up some kind of Wiki/faq-o-matic/cms
article system for putting faqs, tips, etc on, so we can just point people
at it. The main concerns are security (no Wiki terrorists!) and bandwidth -
I've had trouble finding something else of this nature (like the css-discuss
wiki at http://css-discuss.incutio.com/ ), which suggests that if it takes
off, the bandwidth and server loading could be an important concern...

If you have any thoughts on the best way to do this, or what you'd like to see,
please let me know (here or offlist - the email is real...)

Can you guess what this is? http://www.blueboard.com/phone/apache_sept_2003.gif It's a history of the IIs "Titanic", which is being slowly and painfully sunk by the open source Apache web server. In September, Microsoft's IIs web server again continued to lose marketshare dramatically to the open source Apache web server.

I finally narrowed down my code to this situation, quite a few (not all) of my CMyClass objects got hold up after each run of this function via the simple webpage that shows NumberEd editbox. My memory profile shows that those instances survive 3 rounds of GC collections - it's not what I expected. In my real code, CMyClass occupies big amount of memory and they all share one stance of another class that I don't have enough memory hold...

I use A97 and do not always insert line numbers while writing procedures. I find it necessary to go back and add them later to aid in debugging. Nearly 3 years ago, something was mentioned in this NG to the effect that "...when you access a module programatically, there is a lines collection..." Have any of you experimented with your own procedures to aid in numbering lines? Would the lines collection be of some

Bear with me, as I am not a "professional" programmer, but I was working on part of program that reads parts of four text files into a buffer which I re-allocate the size as I read each file. I read some of the items from the bottom up of the buffer, and some from the top down, moving the bottom items back to the new re-allocated bottom on every file read. Then when I've read all four files, I sort the top and bottom items separately...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
