Wireless card not working with Linux Mint...

82 New Member
My wireless card isn't turning on. Not seeing any networks at all.

iwconifg show
lo no wireless extensions
eth1 IEEE 802.11 Access Point: Not-Associated
Link Quality:5 Signal level:0 Noise Level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:0 invalid misc: 0
etho0 no wireless extensions

I have an HP Pavillion dv2000 laptop.
I installed Linux Mint 13 Maya.
I have a Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP_PHY network card

So far I have enabled the driver that Mint provided in the addition drivers menu. It shows Broadcom STA wireless driver and includes my network card in the list of supported drivers.

My wireless still works fine on the windows partition.

So your laptop has funky touch-lights at the top - is the wireless disabled through this light? The wireless LED should be blue - if it is orange, touch it and it should turn blue.

What is the full output of the following command (run as root or sudo)?

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. ifconfig

Thanks so much for you help. I have fiddled with that switch quite a bit.. It's on and it's showing up as blue under my windows partition but it's orange on the mint partition.

So eth0/eth1 (anything that starts with eth) is short for "ethernet connection 0" or "ethernet connection 1" - in short, these are cabled connections.

My experience with Linux has what you're looking for as labeled as wlan0 - or "wireless LAN connection 0." So we're looking for a wlan entry in the ifconfig output.

With HP laptops the orange and blue lights at the top are actual hardware switches - you can turn them on or off by just touching them.

When Mint boots, are you able to touch the orange light and make it turn blue?

No... It will not turn blue with the switched turned on.

I just checked the HP Drivers and Support page - there are no Linux drivers for this - where did you find the driver you installed or what procedure are you using?

When I went to Hardware --> Additional Drivers Mint detected the Broadcom STA wireless driver...

So there isn't a Linux driver for this wireless card? I'm confused.

Let me look into it - just because there isn't one linked to HP's page doesn't mean there isn't one at all - it just means HP didn't put their own out there.

What I need to determine is if Mint is good at detecting wireless interfaces automatically, and how to troubleshoot broadcom wlan's.

Folks, While debugging a wireless card, I came across this interesting bit: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/10/pohletz_desktop_90.html What it indicates is that by default SuSE 9.0 plays with the timeslice values for the Linux kernel in order to provide a "smoother" user experience. In my experience, this can be very bad news for databases under heavy multi-user load.

Okay, once-upon-a-time I tried to start programming by learning C. At the time I was younger and didn't really understand all that C had to offer. I eventually moved over to Microsoft's Visual Basic. It was nice to be able to design a visual application with no effort (too bad I didn't really learn the ins and outs of programming) Long story short, I want to get back into programming, and Python looks like a good choice for me to...

I am wondering if there is a way to disable the MS wireless (not the wireless card) programatically. I would like to be able to turn it off and on. I have the need to turn off the wireless because it seems to interfere with some high speed data acquisition that we are doing.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
