Hello All -
I've exhausted all other resources so any feed back will be most helpful. If this question is not in the correct forum, admins please move.
I have an older Compaq Armada laptop and a Zoom cable modem. I can receive an internet connect for about 3 minutes before losing it. My desktop pc, when connected to the same modem has no issue.
My first thought is the IP is not reassigning however, when I release and renew, the connection is not re-established. DCHP is enabled along with autoconfig. For the time being all any virus software has been disabled. Could this be a MAC address issue with my ISP?
Thanks in Advance,
Bender

Have you taken this issue up with your ISP?
After you lose the connection, what do you see in an ipconfig /all ?
Hello sicarie,
No I haven't taken this up with my ISP yet. I wanted to find out more before I do.
As for the ipconfig /all:
I get everything I should, (sorry for not being more descriptive). The lease date is 2 days, IP is assigned.
The oddest symtom is that I can still PING and get responses from like yahoo.com but, get a DNS server not found error when using a browser. Any suggestions?

Bender,
If your internet browser isn't configured to use a proxy or anything, it sounds like something weird is happening on your ISP's end (you've paid your bill, right? ;), I'd definitely recommend going to them.
It's possible that port 80 is being blocked for some reason, or there's something that your ISP is doing like filtering 80 through another port, but because some script triggered on the DHCP lease times out it won't accept port 80 traffic from you because it thinks that script failed... I don't know, I'd check your browser and then talk to your ISP.
sicarie
::edit:: when you say you get an IP, is it 192.168.x.x? 10.x.x.x? 172.x.x.?
@sicarie
Thanks again for your help sicarie. I think I've narrowed it down to either the ISP or a corrupt antivirus program. The anti-virus keeps giving dll errors and I'm wondering if its the reason that port 80 seems to be blocked. You've given me a starting point so, thanks again.
To answer your question: when I lose connection IP is 192.168 on a PING but, if I open the browser, it tries opening an IP like 63.43.
In the brief moments I do have connection: IE detects proxy (which there isn't one) then opens the page as normal.
I'm tempted to either buy a new laptop, this one was given to me by my father, or to reinstall windoze....

Bender, it's always possible that you have a virus - if you're already considering a re-install, I'd make sure your files are backed up and go for it, though I personally work in security and always prefer a clean build.

I'm maintaining (read: I didn't write it, nor do I have the time to spend to
rewrite it) an application that is suddenly giving me grief.
The reason I say suddenly, is because we're in the process of transitioning
the server on which it runs from Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, to 2003
server (going from IIS 5 to IIS 6). This problem hasn't really occurred on
the 2000 server machine, but it's happening MUCH more on the new 2003 box

I've implemented a countdown timer for a tutorial web page that should
give the user 45 minutes to complete the test, only to find that the
timer is slowly 'losing' time. On average, it actually takes an extra
35 seconds, but has taken an extra 2.5 minutes in some cases. Any
ideas what might be the cause? And more importantly - the fix? Code

Hi,
I've been using an Access application I wrote for an office with the
front-end stored on all computers and the back-end on one of them serving as
an Access file server.
Now we're moving to a 2nd office 15 minutes down the road. Only one office
will be open at a time, so theoretically it'd be possible to copy the
back-end manually every night from one office to another, but frankly,
that's pretty annoying.

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
