Polling cin

Hi,

it seems cin.rdbuf()->in_avail() always returns 0. Why is that? Is there a
way to poll cin for input? I'm using VC 7.1 (7.1.3088). Here is a small
test program:

#include <ctime>
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <windows.h>

using namespace std;

int main()
{
time_t time = clock();

int counter = 1;
while( true ) {

if( cin.rdbuf()->in_avail() ) {
string line;
getline(cin, line);
cout << "``" << line << "''" << endl;
}
else if( clock()-time>=CLOCKS_PER_SEC ) {
cout << counter++ << endl;
time = clock();
}
else
Sleep(100);
}

return 0;
}
