Gmail Talk/Meebo and Polling using Ajax

Hi guys, I have read several discussions on this group (and others)
that talk about polling a server using ajax transactions and if it is
possible to push to the client. The general consensus seems to be "no,
there is no way to push to client using ajax, you have to poll."

Knowing this, I assumed meebo.com and gmail talk are using the same
technique for their ajax chatting apps. However, when I use Fiddler to
sniff their http requests, I cant seem to detect any regular polling
requests. Why is this?

My questions are:
Is gmail talk/meebo doing something other than polling?
Is fiddler not detecting all of their requests? if so, why?

Your thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

KJ

I'm creating a simple AJAX library. It's an object that will return an array containing the response text or xml. I'm trying to find a way to assign the response as a property of the object, but from within an inline function. Within the AJAX object: this.xmlhttp = new XMLHttpRequest(); this.response = ''; //to contain the response text OR xml var that = this; //since we cannot reference this within the

Is it possible to notice a change of window.location.hash without polling? I'm working on a Ajax-platform (yes, inventing the wheel again) and have finished almost everything except the support for back/forward-buttons. The track I'm working on is "hidden frames" to keep state in window.location.hash. I've seen some solutions along this way that includes polling window.location for a change... which doesn't comply with my otherwise...

I am doing some form validation with a mix of javascript and server side methods called via AJAX. When the submit button is pressed the onclick calls the validation function that will return true if everything checks out ok and false if not. The validation function is setup like so: function validateForm() { returnValue = true; ajaxFunctionToCheckDate(); //the way it works, inside the function

Hi, I am trying to put together the last major pieces of my project's puzzle. This is more website/client-side architecture than JavaScript syntax but I hope this is a good place to ask. I'm a little stumped with which direction to take and advice would be greatly appreciated. I think this is a generally interesting problem but I haven't seen a post this long here before :S I have developed half of the admin interface for an e-commerce

Hi everyone, I would like to be able to send updates to my web page from the server. If I understood correctly, this is not possible to achieve in a web environment, unless some sort of polling mechanism is used. I read a few articles and some of them suggest using some Javascript, while other suggest using Web Services. Some ways to achieve some kind of polling mechanism is on this document:...

Hi! Im kind of new to ajax (but actually an old timer when it comes to javascript). I have the following question. I have a webapplication that will be accessed from an ajax interface. However, I have the following problem, my webapplication could potentially need to update itself once a second. Do I have to create a polling meachnism in my javascript that tries to connect to my application every second or so, or is there another way, for the...

Hello, we are implementing a function that uses recursion to poll a server. This implementation seems like it would cause a memory ramp up and possibly a stack overflow. Am I correct? Is there anyway to accomplish polling without this issue? function poll() { $.get('/message_queue/' + gaming_session.guid, function(command_string) { var messages = JSON.parse(command_string); for (var i = 0; i < messages.length; i++) {...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
