net.tcp port sharing service - any disadvantages?

Hi,

I'm developing a set of services for a software solution.
It will be broken down in several application including a few
windows services.

It is very likely that most of these services will run on one
(server) computer but we can't enforce that.

To make support and configuration a little easier, I was
thinking about using port sharing, so all services could run
on the same port.

I've found a few examples on how to setup port sharing and
this is all very easy. But how about any disadvantages?
This subject isn't exactly wide spread on the web and I just
can't find any negatives about it.

Should there be any reason for system administrator NOT
to like port sharing?
Thanks,
Marcel

Hello, This question is related to sharing .Net projects across solutions and is reposted from the SourceSafe group. We have several different solutions and want to share common assemblies across them. Is it best to share the project and its files to each solution (each solution has it's own shared project), or have each solution point to the same file location of the project?

Hi, I have a web deployment project that asks for the port number in the standard dialog (along with the virtual directory). I also install a web service and this does not have an associated dialog. How do I use the port number (filled in the first dialog) when installing the web service? I reckon I should change the propety for the port of the web service, perhaps in a custom action, but I don't know how to make this change. I already...

I am writing a mobile application to interface with a legacy system and I am planning to use web services to communicate with this system. The legacy system receives data through a serial port. What I would like to do is make the serial port accessible via a web service. The web service and the legacy application would be running on the same machine. The mobile application would access the web service via a network connection. It...

Hi, I am making a prototype system with Remoting in the bottom of the system. An XML Web Service is using the remote object on an IIS to present data. I am using a TcpChannel for communicating between the XML Web Service and the host for the remote object. Within the host a port is defined and the channel registered. It starts listening for requests. The destination port is therefore clearly defined.

Hi all, I have a webservice that's running on a specific port (8003) in webserver behind a firewall. The service accesses a CC authorization service on the internet. We use a proxy to get out to the internet. We have a domain name registered for this webservice. So my WSDL gives me the following: http://ourdomain.com:8003/ProcessCC.asmx

Hi all, I have 2 applications trying to gain access to the same GPRS modem port COM3 (the 1st application comes with the product and can't be configured to use another port and 2nd application is mine and is fully configurable) so the most evident solution is to use a port sharing application, creating 2 virtual ports and the sharing application will synchronize the access to the physical port and so they access the same port in the same...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
