How to change the COM port name?

1 New Member
Hi all,

I have 2 applications trying to gain access to the same GPRS modem port COM3 (the 1st application comes with the product and can't be configured to use another port and 2nd application is mine and is fully configurable)
so the most evident solution is to use a port sharing application, creating 2 virtual ports and the sharing application will synchronize the access to the physical port and so they access the same port in the same time.

so far everything is OK, but the problem is that the application that comes with the product will connect only to the port (COM3), and can't be redirected to the virtual one!! (and by the way Modem ports can be changed from Device Manager >> port...)

I got the idea to rename that port (COM3) to COM6 for example, and then the COM3 will be assigned to a virtual port to which the product application will connect, we can use COM4 as a virtual port to which my application will connect and the sharing application will coordinate the access the physical port (COM6), I searched everywhere how this can be done but didn't find anything useful!! I know that it can be done since COM1 COM2 ... are just symbolic links to the port's physical address but how to implement it, that's the question!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Can a change of SQL port affect a SQLDataReader's ability to pull data? The code that follows was working just fine yesterday, and the only thing that's changed between then and now is the SQL port. The connection string is updated with the port - aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd,eeee - where eeee is the new port number. The connection comes in just fine, state = 1 (though yesterday it was "Open", weird), and the query runs without error in Query...

Hi all, I am fairly new to python, but not programming and embedded. I am having an issue which I believe is related to the hardware, triggered by the software read I am doing in pySerial. I am sending a short message to a group of embedded boxes daisy chained via the serial port. When I send a 'global' message, all the connected units should reply with their Id and Ack in this format '0 Ack' To be certain that I didn't miss a...

I'm writing a driver in Python for an old fashioned piece of serial equipment. Currently I'm using the USPP serial module. From what I can see all the serial modules seem to set the timeout when you open a serial port. This is not what I want to do. I need to change the timeout each time I do a "read" on the serial port, depending on which part of the protocol I've got to. Sometimes a return character is expected within half a second,...

Hey All, I have some classes that I recently built for a website which uses the HttpWebRequest & HttpWebResponse objects from the System.Net namespace. Basically, the classes rap submitted data up, connect to external websites on external servers and post / remove the data from these other sites. It works fine locally but when uploaded to the BCentral production server, the outgoing requests get shutdown.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
