How to open a password-protected PDF on website?

1 New Member
Hi,

My website has PDF documents that's available for registered users to view online (through my site) only.

Currently, I can't find any solutions to prevent users from downloading/"save-as" the PDF doc in their local drives, so I'm thinking of password-protecting these PDFs.
This will ensure that they'd not be able to view the PDFs even though they download it and save-as local.

However, how do I open these password-protected PDFs on my site?
When I redirect to these PDFs, it will prompt for password.

It'd defeat all protection intent if I were to give the password to the user to enter, right?

Please help.

Thanks!

The answer is no. Password protection may prevent users from being redirected to the pdf, but users may still be able to browse your folders and access the file. Even worse search engines may spider your site & pick up the pdf files. Anyone could access them then without even going to your site.

What you may need need is to create permissions on the folder/files so the files can only be accessed through the accounts members log in through. It would also help to place a text file in your root directory telling search engines not spider this folder. HTH.

With the body tag calling out 'window onload', a function with a 'window.open' fails at the 'window.open' line. If I cut out the body tag, the function executes as normal. At first I thought it was the entire function failing, but I tested with alerts and found that it was only the 'window.open' that fails to execute. The function is being called by a link, and I suspected some problem with the body alink/vlink but after cutting that out...

Okay, here is what's happening: I have a reasonably fast laptop (1.4 GHz Mobile M, so comparable to 2.5GHz P4) doing .net development. Running Windows XP pro, SP2 IIS is installed and running fine All SQL Servers I am referring to share a small (10 computers or so) LAN with a 100MB Switch. No other computers on the LAN exhibit this problem.

I'm just starting to learn asp.net. What I have is a registration form for a message board system. Basically, the user enters in their info and it's validated. So I have a custom validator check to make sure the username is unique, I have another custom validator that makes sure the email address is unique and then I save the info to the database. That means I open the connection to the sqlserver 3 times. Seems inefficient to me. Is...

Can't open my .mdb I was experimenting with opening an access database in IIS. For experimenting, I have an .mdb called HasbaraSample. In this case I copied it to the C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Access folder. I had various problems trying to get it to open in IIS. I went to asp.net forums and was told to right_click the app_data folder and click the security tab. To make a long story short, that never worked out.

I have a simple webservice that performs a SELECT query against a database, and then an INSERT statement on the same database/table. The problem arises at the time when we create the second OleDB connection object and attempt to Open() it. The connection string is exactly the same for both connection objects. Another intersting thing is that this code works fine when it is used in a Windows Form project. The code snippet: try { //...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
