I write CRUD database applications for a living for an audience of
about 100 users per application using classic ASP. I maintain and
frequently change on user's request 22 different applications by
myself.
Recently we have had .NET 1.1 then 2.0 installed and have been told to
use it.
After reading the books about it, and trying it for a couple of
months, I got so mad I decided to write down all of my issues and
rants and post them here....

Hi,
I have the following situation. COM server exposed on Windows CE 5.0 through
SOAP (SOAP toolkit)
C# client on XP calls Web Service methods on CE (COM)SOAP server.
The complete call takes 527msec. Why is it so much?
The SOAP method call is very simple : a COM method with 1 argument (long)
The Ethereal logging shows that the CE server side responsiveness is good,
but the XP C# client waits a very long time before he gives an ack
on...

I have a web service, that until recently ran very quickly every time it
was called, first call included. Now, the first time it is called, it is
very slow and subsequent calls are normal. The strange thing is that if
I set it up to allow HTTP GET in the app.config so I can call it from a
remote web browser, every call is equally fast, including the first
call. My determination is that the slowdown must be in the client
application and is...

Hi,
I am consuming a java web service in .NET C# smart client, which is based upon Microsoft's SCSF application block. The SCSF is a wrapper over WinForms. When I make a call to any of the Java webservice, for the first time its very slow (takes 600-800ms) but after the first call, if I make any subsequent calls to the same web service then it is preety fast.
The same thing when I did with a Java client, the results are preety good...

Hello.
I'm working in Visual Studio, language is C#, and I am coding a
cryptography program.
At some point, I need random values, and rather than using a made-
for-
it random generator, I use the first bytes of
RSACryptoServiceProvider.ExportParameters(false).Modulus.
I've posted this subject in the Security subsection of the dotnet
group, but it seems that that group is a bit more inactive than this

The web service is called by a program running on pocket pc. When to
call the web service, the first call is still ok, but for the second
or later calls, it will throw "403 Forbidden" WebException. When to
test it using the web interface on pocket IE, everything is fine.
Before there was no such problem, it only happened within a week or
so. I suspect it's caused by the server's firewall settings, but how
come the first call is ok? This...

Here is a problem I would like some opinions on. I have a stored
procedure (I suspect that the problem exists for other procedures as
well, but I haven't verified it). First time it runs (each day) it
takes 8-10 minutes to run. If I rerun the procedure after a while it
runs in 2-4 minutes. The SP doesnt update any data itself, but of
course others do but that difference in data is irrelevant for the
problem. My first thought was that it...

Hi John,
Hopefully this post will find its way back to you - or perhaps be answered
by someone else. As I mentioned in my last post on the earlier portion of
this thread, changing the serialization settings for the build handled the
initial slows we encountered when invoking the web service.
Since that time, we ported the original VB.net code over to C# - this was
done to make it cleaner easier to include the project in the rest of...

ONU (Optical Network Unit) is one of the key components for providing high-speed Internet services. Its primary function is to act as an endpoint device located at the user's premises. However, people are often confused as to whether an ONU can Work As a Router. In this blog post, we’ll explore What is ONU, What Is Router, ONU & Router’s main usage, and What is the difference between ONU and Router. Let’s take a closer look !

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...
