Hello,
I'm writing a Windows service which performs some potentially long-running,
uninterruptable processes. When the service starts, I create a separate
worker thread to perform the work so as to not block the service control
manager upon startup. The design quandry I'm running into though is how best

I am experimenting with a new facility that will replace an existing
client/server environment that uses named pipes for communication.
The client application uses SHBrowseForFolder standard Windows dialog to
generate a list of all domains and all servers within those domains, thus
permitting the client to select a server to which to attempt a connection.
The client attempts to connect to a specific named pipe on that server and
reports...

Hello all,
I apologise in advance for the long windedness of
this post, but I feel that if I am going to get any
solution to this problem, it is important that I present
as much information that will be useful in diagnosing
the problem.
I have an application which calls a method of a web service
that we host remotely. I have deployed the application to a

I am new to web services, and wonder if it is possible to have a web
service run all time and start the constructor before anyone calls any
web method. My problem is that a lot of data is read in the
constructor, and if this is to be loaded every time somebody calls a
web method, thing are really slow. I have tried to just call the web
methods, but it seems like the constructor is called every time.

I'm running into some issues on maintaining a static variable across
the lifetime of a web service and I was wondering if anyone could help.
Background:
We have developed a C#/1.1 web service running on IIS 5/6 that
interfaces with a 3rd party DLL referenced by using the DLLImport
attribute.
Interacting with this 3rd party software through this dll requires an

I have written a simple WCF service hosted in a Windows console application
and a simple WCF client console application that connects successfully to
that service and retrieves data. I then ported the console application to
WinForms and also got that to work properly.
My next move was to host the WCF service in a Windows service application. I
believe I have that working correctly, but I can't for the life of me get a
client to connect...

Hi,
I am consuming a java web service in .NET C# smart client, which is based upon Microsoft's SCSF application block. The SCSF is a wrapper over WinForms. When I make a call to any of the Java webservice, for the first time its very slow (takes 600-800ms) but after the first call, if I make any subsequent calls to the same web service then it is preety fast.
The same thing when I did with a Java client, the results are preety good...

Hi John,
Hopefully this post will find its way back to you - or perhaps be answered
by someone else. As I mentioned in my last post on the earlier portion of
this thread, changing the serialization settings for the build handled the
initial slows we encountered when invoking the web service.
Since that time, we ported the original VB.net code over to C# - this was
done to make it cleaner easier to include the project in the rest of...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
