What is the best approach for a for an application Upgrade with .net

1 New Member
Hi,

I alreay developed an app that is using a SQL server database. My app is still under some development and ocassionally I have to change my database schema. The thing is that when I upgrade my app in the client machines I have to uninstall the current version to install the new one and with this my databases and current data are lost due they are part of the setup project.

My question is about some way to keep my databases on the pc after uninstall and then include the new schema changes in my new installation, so when I install the new version all data remains.

Thanks for your hints.

I am looking for some examples of how to manage DDL scripts among various versions of a production db and development and testing. I have tried a few things in the past, and it always gets very muddled and cumbersome. I need to be able to build any version of the database from scratch, BUT I also need to maintain an upgrade path from any version to any later version. So it is not enough to just maintain a master build script, but I...

Hi I am interested in converting a Access 97 application to VB.Net (well okay rewriting). This would be a VB.Net client with a SQL Server backend, as opposed to my other alternative which would be rewriting this as an Access XP application with a SQL Server backend. I have worked enough in VB.Net at home to known that this would be a better solution but this would be the first application for our company using VB.Net (a largely...

Hello I have employed as a developer in a software company that its team uses FoxPro / VB 6.0 / VC++ 6.0 as the developing tools and newly is going to migrate to VS.NET. There is a project modified that is to upgrade a big, more than 100,000 lines DOS based program developed by FoxPro 2.x to .NET platform. The design is as previous and the implementation will be reprogrammed. As a duty in my job I should find an answer about the

I have a simple .NET application with two or three listViews which are filled with icons and when the user click on the proper item, they display the related images. I use "image = null ; " for all images that have been used and are going to be closed. This is how ever no way to reduce the memory consumption. I have noticed , using the task manager, that garbage collector doesn't actually do any collections unless the computer becomes low...

Hi all, I'm writing my first .NET website and am wondering what the best method for including headers and footers is. I was thinking either a user or server control but am not sure which would be best performance-wise / maintenance wise. OR if there is another approach that is more commonly followed. I'm interested in performance mainly, but not at the expense of being able to maintain the headers within reason. I'm coming from the...

Hi We need some advice: We are thinking of upgrading our Access database from Access 2000 to Access 2004. How stable is MS Office 2003? (particularly Access 2003). We are just a small company and this is a big decision for us(!) It's not just the money it's committing to an new version of Access!

Dear Colleagues: I feel that the dumbest questions are those that are never asked. I have been given the opportunity to get into .NET. Our organization has a subscription with Microsoft that basically entitled to us to just about every .Net development tool you can imagine. I cant even begin to mention them. To begin with, my background is not that of a programmer, but a systems engineer and the closest I have come to "programming"...

We have an Extranet with one customer with 20,000 users that has, unfortunately, standardized on Netscape 4.77 for the entire company. We are in the process of rewriting this application from Java to .NET and, of course, would not like to be constrained by the Least Common Denominator (LCD) this particular company represents. Question: What is the best way to handle this without having to double the development effort? For example, MVC...

Hi, i am using red hat enterprise 4. It has python 2.3 installed. What is the best way to upgrade to python 2.4? I think one way is to compile python 2.4 from the source, but I can't remove the old one since when i do 'rpm -e python', i get error like 'failed dependencies'. Thank you for any idea.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...
