ASP.NET (C# code behind): How to set asp.net session variables and open a window

14 New Member
Im currently writing a small phone directory, that allows a user to search by given name, surname, address, etc. everything is implemented with asp.net (the backend is in c#).

My problem comes about when i want to pass the user entered values across to another window, that displays the results, using javascript. The easiest and most secure way for me to do this i think would be using asp.net's session variables.

I know how to access session variables, and i know they cannot be directly set by javascript on the client side. What i would love to be able to do is set the session variables to the fields on the page, then open a new window and have it retrieve the session variables to populate a datagrid (i know how to retrieve the variables, its just the setting of them before that, that im having problems with)

So to restate my question again: How can i open a new window (using something like window.open()) and set my asp.net session variables at the same time (from the click of a single button)?

if this is not possible at all, can you please give me suggestions on how i would go about making something of the same functionality.

thanks in advance.

I've noticed that session variables will persist on Mac IE even after all browser windows have been closed. One must quit the program to clear the session variables. This presents a security risk for my session variable based security scheme. Basically, the risk is that a user will login to my site, close the window when done and allow someone else to come up to the machine, go back to my site and be logged into the previous user's...

Howdy I've got a rather strange issue occuring. I used forms based .NET authentication, although I'm also setting some session variables when people login. However, I've found when people use one of my webform pages which includes a button that pops up a window where you can upload files, if you upload files in this popup window, it seems to somehow clear out all of the session variables and the users get logged out. However, if...

When a user opens a new IE browser window using File-New-Window the integrity of an application which relies on session state is COMPLETELY undermined. Anyone who overlooks the fact that File-New-Window creates an instance of IE in the same process with the same SessionID as the parent window is in big trouble. This fundamentally restricts the usefullness of using session state management. I probably missed it somewhere - can...

Some ASP.NET applications use Session Variables extensively to maintain state. These should be re-written to use viewstate, hidden fields, querystring, etc. instead. This is because if a user opens a new IE window with Ctrl-N or File-New-Window, BOTH WINDOWS SHARE THE SAME SESSION VARIABLES. This cannot be prevented.

Hi just wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to tell if a child window is still open in the code behind in the parent window (web application vs.net 2005)? I have a web app and am using the following to add an attribute to the body tag, body.Attributes.Add("onunload", "opener.location.href=opener.location.href;");. This causes the parent page to reload anytime the child page has a post back event or closes. Also I am getting an...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
