Hello,
I'm thinking of creating a Windows service to backup a small enterprise system running on an Oracle database. My idea is to create a Windows service on the main server and also each remote file server, so that the main server can control the entire backup sequence, including the start time, through service-to-service remoting (or with the new WCF).
My dilemma basically comes down to using Windows services or plain old EXEs. I don't think it's quite right to have a windows service running 24/7 just for a daily backup. But then again, I'd like to know for sure that the clients are up and available before each backup, and be able to notify the admin in case of a problem. And, it seems there's a lot less hassle and security issues involved once the Windows service are setup, compared to mapped drives, access control, which users are allowed to run them, etc. with EXEs.
What do you think? Is this a good time to setup a Windows service on each machine, or is there a better/more proper way?
Thank you!

We are trying to build a system where we have a Windows Service do some
manipulation of data, and then sending the data to a Windows App. I had
posted a question of how we should do this and was told remoting was the way
to go.
So I got a client and a server program up and going and from the client I
can call a routine in the server program. I can't figure out how to actually
send data to the client. At the moment the client calls a...

Argh! This problem is driving me nuts! Can you help?
In November of 2003, I installed a web service on Windows Server 2003 built
in VB.NET for v1.1.4322 of the framework. It contains a timer
(System.Timers.Timer) which has an interval of 24 hours. Actually, it reads
a time like 2AM out of the config file, and calculates the time between the
start of the service to 2AM, and sets the timer. When the timer expires, it
re-reads the...

I have a windows service that has been running fine for almost 6 months.
Last week, it just stopped working. It is still in the task list and
still shows "started" in the service manager. There are no exceptions
thrown, it just seems to have fell asleep.
The service runs in a loop that checks about 80 servers on a daily basis
to see what the status of the previous nights backup job is. It
downloads the zipped log files from each...

Hi;
I have developed a VB.net app in a module that queries a database, loads the
data into several arrays and then loops through the array. It then compares
time data stored in the array with the current system time. If there is a
match a program is then started. The apps purpose is be like the windows task
scheduler. And I want
to run it as service because it will run continuosly.
I can't seen to find an example of where an app like...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
