type(i)returns <type 'float'> if i is a float so why isn't == working?

I was very surprised to discover that

How can these two objects be considered equal? Is there a *general* way
to test for date != datetime as well as 4.5 != 4.6?

I have to lists, A and B, that may, or may not be equal. If they are not
identical, I want the output to be three new lists, X,Y and Z where X has
all the elements that are in A, but not in B, and Y contains all the
elements that are B but not in A. Z will then have the elements that are

integer can be compared with each other and decimal can be compared to
integer but decimal can't be compared to float?
