Where are ref types that are members of value types stored?

Structs are value types, strings are ref types. If you have something
like this:

struct foo
{

System.String str;
}

foo TheDayToday;

then, where's

TheDayToday.str

going to be stored?

(a) The string is going to be stored on the stack;
(b) The struct is going to be stored on the stack with a 32-bit
System.IntPtr/System.UInt32 also copied on the stack holding the
address/reference to the actual string allocated on the heap.

(Basically the "structs are stored on the stack, reference types are
stored on the heap" is an unfortunate oversimplificat ion - once you
understand the true picture, it's pretty simple anyway.)

Thank you, Jon. I read not only that article, but also the other
articles on your website, including the bio section of your website
too. You have some very well-written articles there, and reading the
article you pointed to confirmed my belief and reinstated my
understanding of the value-type and ref-type storage locations.
