Problem getting ApplicationUpda ter component to work

I downloaded the ".NET Client Applications: .NET Application Updater
Component" article by Jamie Cool along with the .Net Application Updater
component, and I'm trying to get it to work.

I created a blank form and added the component to the form. I compiled the
program, resulting in version 1.0.0.35885. I then made some changes, and
compiled again (version 1.0.1.22943).

I created the server manifest file, which I placed on the server, along with
version 1.0.1.22943 of the program. I copied AppStart, appupdater.dll and
version 1.0.0.35885 of the program to a different machine, setting up the
config file and the directory structure appropriately.

I invoked AppStart, which in turn invoked version 1.0.0.35885 of my program.
The Updater component did go out to the server as ZoneAlarm did prompt for
permission. Yet, the Updater component is not displaying its user
interface, or otherwise updating the program.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about troubleshooting this issue?

Hi, I'm just moving to VB.NET and I'm trying to load a recordset intoan XMLReader and loop through the records. When I use the.ReadElementString() method to get the next 'record' if it hasreached the last record (eof) it fails with "Invalid attempt toread when reader is closed". It doesn't seem capable of findingthis out until the error has occured though (Readstate isinteractive prior to the failure and EOF is false.) Is this limited...

Hi all I get an exception when trying to deserialize a simple configuration file using XML Serialization. The very long stacktrace can be seen at the bottom of this message. I've see other messages related a similar error but none of the solutions suggested are valid in case :/ I have tracked the problem down to the compilation of the temporary DLL that handles the actual serialization. The following commandline (that is one single...

Our asp.net web app uses a .NET component (DLL) in the bin directory to call several stored procedures back to back to perform updates. They don't return any data. Sometimes the total execution time can take 2-3 minutes, but even though I have set the executionTimeout in web.config to a high number of seconds (2400), the request will still time out after 90 seconds. The user sees a Request timed out error. The app logs a ThreadAborted...

We have a component that has no window. Well, no window in managed code - it uses a DLL which itself uses a window, and this is our problem! When the garbage collector runs and removes our component (created dynamically by, say, a button click, and then not referenced any more), the GC runs in a different thread, which prohibits the DLL to destroy its window, resulting in a GPF when the WndProc of that window is called - the code is gone...

Without getting into a lot of unnecessary detail, I'm working on a project to allow PHP to communicate with a proprietary database. The IPC mechanism I'm using is 'proc_open'; there is a server-side component (written in C) that 'listens' for PHP requests (via its stdin) and spits out the appropriate response (via its stdout). Conversely, the PHP side uses fwrite() to send to the component's stdin and fread() to read from the component's...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
