Developing, building, and testing. How do it the best? Learning from the world leader - Microsoft

Developing, building, and testing. How do it the best? Learning from the
world leader - Microsoft

I'm very interested in how the developing/build/testing workflow @ Microsoft
looks like. I think Microsoft as world leader in software developing
business must have a very good workflow. Does anyone know how the
development flow @ Microsoft looks like?

I'm also interested in the workflow in your company perhaps the workflow in
your company better then @ Microsoft? What do you think about test driven
development?

Well, they do have a book called "Analyzing Requirements and Defining
Microsoft .Net Solution Architecture" which is all about large scale
software development process (envisioning, planning, developing,
stabilizing/testing, deploying) and very little .net. It's one of the
requirements for MCSD.NET.

We're leaning more toward XTreme programming these days, especially with
..NET where the superior versioning allows you to do quick build cycles and
updates.

Wired has a nice segment on it:

Very few companies ever do the benchmarking necessary to establish which CMM
level they fall in. In my estimation., the vast majority of companies are
at level 1, a few at level 2 and a very few at levels 3, 4, 5. There is far
from uniform agreement, even amoung acedemics, that the CMM really measures
the right things for many types of businesses, so it's not at all surprising
that few organizations go to the trouble of being assessed.

If you're interested in the practices of a CMM level 3/4 organization, take
a look at the NASA LaRC Software Process Improvement Initiative home page at
http://sw-eng.larc.nasa.gov/ or the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Software Engineering Laboratory at
http://sel.gsfc.nasa.gov/website/index.htm. I recall finding a NASA
department that claimed to be at CMM level 5, but I can't recall the group
or find that reference anymore.

Hi Everyone, I've recently been reading some articles about unit-testing in Python , but I am a bit confused: where do I go to get started with this? I tried googling for "unittest" but all I've found are some old links to projects that already use it, and the older (as the articles put it) PyUnit project. I'm sorry if this is a obvious question or one that has already been answered, but unit-testing sounds interesting and I'm not sure...

http://www.JavascriptToolbox.com/bestpractices/ I started writing this up as a guide for some people who were looking for general tips on how to do things the 'right way' with Javascript. Their code was littered with document.all and eval, for example, and I wanted to create a practical list of best practices that they could easily put to use. The above URL is version 1.0 (draft) that resulted. IMO, it is not a replacement for the FAQ,...

Hi, I am a C/C++ developer of quite a few yesrs, although I am relatively new to Windows (Unix background). I am about to begin work on a project that would require me to develop several GUI rich frontend applications. I would like to hear from developers ou there if there is a book they would recommend, to help me hit the ground running - i.e. a book that is NOT an introductory text on programming/C++ but rather one that dives...

Hello, I'm looking for a book with in-depth coverage of developing server controls, particularly custom controls. Ideally, the book would have a good amount of how-to's and best practices, but also serve as a fairly complete reference. It doesn't need a whole lot in the way of introductory material as I already have most of the basics down. So I've narrowed my search down to 2 books: "Developing Microsoft ASP.NET Server Controls and...

Hi all As I'm sure is common knowledge the version of IIS included in XP Pro is limited in that you can only create 1 website in the IIS snap in. As an ASP.net developer this is a pain in the arse because I can't figure out how to stop having this fact cock up my relative urls. When I create a virtual directory - presumably what you're supposed to do when you're only allowed one site my relative URL's refer to the root of the

Hi everybody, I'm a 22 yrs old girl. I've been developing a Database for 6 months no using Access. A week ago I had this feeling that I'm wasting my time in Access. I don't think it's wise to keep on working with Access. Instead I think I should consider learning and being a certified Oracle proffessional or something. What do you guys think? Thanks for your help. Miriam

Our .Net team has just inherited a junior programmer that we need to get up to speed as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, his skill set is largely Access with some VB6 and ASP classic experience. We employ some parts of XP such as pair programming, and this should help. Other than books, does anyone have any suggestions? His skill set is pretty antiquated and we need to get him up to speed as quickly as possible so any suggestions...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
