How do I use/reach MySQL on my ISP's server?

I want to learn MySQL. I started reading the book MySQL by Paul DuBois,
second edition. I have the option of downloading and installing a copy of
MySQL on my computer (PC) or use MySQL provided by my ISP.

The question is how do I use/reach MySQL on my ISP's server? It appears easy
enough to setup the database usernames etc. since the setup and maintenance
are done through an interface.

In the book there is a sample database that I am to use during the training
process. Can I upload that database to the db folder on my ISP and somehow
connect to it via the Web?

Would it be easier to install MySQL on my computer or access MySQL from my
ISP?

If there is a Web site that contains some or all of the information I need
please point me there.

Learning under pressure is going to be the cause of my death!

Any suggestions or comments are welcomed!

Thanks!

Depends on lot of things, some ISPs won't even let you do all the things
you might need or want to do. You will get best control and perhaps
learn the most of it, if you install it on your own computer. Installing
MySQL on Windows is so easy that even the secretary on my company can do
it. Usually installing it on Linux is also normally easy, but there have
been difficulties on that area with some distributions.

This will be your homepage for the next months:

Thank you for the information Aggro! I have setup MySQL, Apache &
PHP on my Windows (W2K) computer. Using my computer IS a much better way to
learn MySQL & PHP.

Cheers!

If I have an MySQL database on my local w2k, how do I transfer it onto my ISP server? The ISP gave me the name of an empty MySQL database they set up for me, the username and the password with no further explanations. I came here from ASP/Access where I was just uploading a mdb file into my webspace. But with MySQL there should be a different procedure, should it not?

Hi, I would like to import the tables from MySQL database into Access database and I am not sure how to go about it. I tired to "Import External Data" from Access, selected "ODBC database" from file type dropdown, selected "New data source" and picked SQL Server from the list. I specified the server name (mydomain.com) along with user id and password. But when I clicked on "Next", I got: "connection failed: SQL Server Error:10060,...

I suddenly find myself in urgent need of instruction on how to communicate with a MySQL database table on a web server, from inside of my company's Access-VBA application. I know VBA pretty well but have never before needed to do this HTTP/XML/MySQL type functions.

Hello, I'm a php/mysql beginner... Is there any way of making the mysql command line client full-screen? Sometimes it's easier to use the client than go thru php, but since it's only about 80 characters wide that limits its usefulness. Thanks, Gerard http://homepage.eircom.net/~gerfmcc]

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
