MySQL ON PPC....

hi all,

I am a newbie .....I have compiled the source code of mysql-4.1.9 on
PPC-Linux

Its not giving any errors during configure,make or make install.

But,when i try to start the server using mysqld_safe...i ts throwing
error like this..

Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/var
STOPPING server from pid file /usr/local/mysql/var/hostname.pid
050820 00:09:01 mysqld ended
What is the Problem...?

and when i execute ./mysql Its giving Error Like this.......
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Can anyone help me...regarding these issues....

Mysqld failed to start for some reason. Perhaps some file has the wrong
permissions mode, or some other problem. Are you trying to start
mysqld_safe when running as root or as a non-superuser?

Look in mysqld's log file for further details about the cause. The
location of the log file is usually in <DATADIR>/<HOSTNAME>.er r, next to
the pid file. So in your case it is probably
/usr/local/mysql/var/<HOSTNAME>.er r.

executing all these commands in root user mode only...
No mysql server is already running....i checked with "ps ef"

Is there an existing file /tmp/mysql.sock?
If there is no mysqld running, it should be safe to remove such a file
with "rm". Sometimes a hiccup occurs, and if mysqld didn't start or
stop properly, it might leave that file there by accident. You can
remove it.

Another problem may be that your mysqld is trying to start as a
dedicated user/group "mysql"/"mysql". Did you create this user and group?

I know you compiled MySQL from source, but the result is that you now
have a binary, so some of the runtime configuration in that web page is
relevant. :-)

Yes, he needs to delete the /tmp/mysql.sock file.

#rm -f /tmp/mysql.sock

Also, when starting mysqld as root, use the --user switch to specify the
user who will own the process (typically 'mysql'):

#mysqld --user mysql &

The user/group mysql must both exist as you said, and the data directories
should have rwx permissions for the mysql user (only). For example, if
his data directory is /usr/local/mysql/data/ :

#chown -R mysql:mysql /usr/local/mysql/data
#chmod -R 700 /usr/local/mysql/data

Then it should work.

Thanks for your response.

I followed your Instructions i.e; creating mysql user and running with
--user=mysql.

But, Now its giving error Like..

hi ,

I have solved one issue out of that error ....
hostname is needed to be set.

Now for
../bin/mysqld_safe
error is:
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
STOPPING server from pid file /usr/local/mysql/data/hostname.pid
050821 20:12:56 mysqld ended

and for ./bin/mysql
../bin/mysql: error while loading shared libraries:
libmysqlclient. so.14: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory.

but that file is present in usr/local/mysql/lib/ directory.

I couldn't figure out what the problem is.....

I think you can solve this by editing /etc/ld.so.conf, adding the
/usr/local/mysql/lib directory as a line in that conf file, and then run
"/sbin/ldconfig" (while logged in as root) to refresh the linker cache.
