XML Vs MySQL for a Mobile Site

2 New Member
Hi All,

Hope I've posted this in the right forum as I will be using PH

I am currently in the process of designing a php based web site that will display info about new bands etc. The users will be able to add their own articles such as reviews, tour dates, photos, videos etc. There will also be a mobile site which will allow the user to add content from their handset. The mobile content will only be text at the moment.

I am wondering what would be the best backend to use on this? I am pretty familiar with MySQL but Im not sure how effective this is to use with mobiles? Im hearing so much about XML that it is an option Im guessing I need to look into.

From the mobile device, the user would be able to view text content like gig listings and then would be able to add content aswell. Obviously a login facility would be required on the mobile.

Any advice would be great, hope this all makes sense! :)

cheers

Backends are by definition "in the back" so whatever you use on the backend of the website doesn't matter. What you really need to look at is how you are going to design your front end so that the mobile phones browsers and little tiny processors do not have to do too much work.

A well designed CSS Page will pick up that it is being viewed on a mobile browser using the connection tag things (Sorry I can't remember their names, some kind of connection header) and will usually only display an essential text version of the site.

I know absolutely nothing about this. I've been banging around various tutorials. Most just sort of skip over this. The closest I came is: http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/phpmysql/4 However, their example: $query = "INSERT INTO contacts VALUES ('','$first','$last','$phone','$mobile','$fax','$email','$web')";

Hey asp.net 2.0 I wonder if it's possible to have both standard asp.net and mobile asp.net in the same web application. When the web server gets a request it can detect if this requested comes from a mobile or not???. Maybe there is setting in web.config specifying the default page if requested by a mobile phone???

Hi all... I need some help figuring out what sort of script is needed to first: detect if a viewer is coming from a mobile device and second: if so, redirect the viewer to the mobile site. IIS Server home site: site.com mobile site: site.com/mobile I have researched and found code to implement... but it was for an .htaccess file for use on APACHE.

I've come across numerous mobile phones with which ASP.NET pages can be accessed on the Internet. Then why has Microsoft developed a separate programming model to create ASP.NET apps for mobile devices when regular ASP.NET pages can be accessed from mobile devices? Ron

I am reading some stuff in self paced course 728 about mobile applications. But the first thing that comes into my mind is, why do I need to build special server side code, if the browser happens to be a mobile device? Cannot mobile browsers access normal websites? Should I copy almost a whole server side application/website to a mobile device website, and double maintain all changes in my web applications if I want to reach both mobile...

I saw a MS demo a few years back where they developed a web page and the software automatically rendered it for different devices. Is this what I'm looking for? http://www.asp.net/mobile/ Much of the info looks old. I have a MSDN account where can I download it or is it already in VS 2008 and I just don't know how to find it? I'm mainly interested in having simple pages render in Internet Explorer

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
