Help Kubuntu, Nvidia driver, X server

464 Recognized Expert Contributor
Hey guys I just installed yesterday the latest version of Kubuntu (so expect many more questions to come :) and I tried to install the latest Nvidia driver by using the following commands, which i found on various web sties.
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Hit Ctrl+Alt+F1
  2. sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
  3. sudo sh /home/Desktop/Documents/<Nvidia Driver Files Name>
  4.
the driver starts to install, but then it says that there is an X server running and it cannot continue the install. How do i stop the X server? I thought the kdm stop was suppose to stop it. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi!
Check this Trick from the Linux Tips and Tricks here on bytes. You're looking for something like xserver, xorg or X11.

Thanks for the link, I'll be sure to look more closely next time on the tips section. The weird thing was after i started kubuntu again i ran the commands i posted above and it stopped the xserver. I now have another problem, but I'll start a new thread for it.

Just a post for anyone else that is having this problem (as I've now discovered the solution). The problem is where when looking in the dialog resource view of an MFC project in Visual Studio .NET (2003 in my case) the dialog sizing gets garbled and it chops off the edges of the dialog somehow and renders the user unable to edit the dialog properly without screwing the sizing up. Well after months of having this problem I finally...

Would love to be able to click on any If-statement and launch a utility that would find what A97 believes to be its corresponding EndIf. Such a tool would save me lots of time as I am forever botching them up and having to go back 'n fix 'em.

Hello all - I'm creating an application that uses a datagridview control. My development environment is an HP Laptop with a NVIDIA Geforce 4 440 Go 64M. While using this object, a queer effect occurs where, if you just let the application sit idle (usually within a minute), the gridlines and border of the datagridview control will be redrawn over the form.

Day 2 of Kubuntu, problem # 2: I'd told you I'd be back :) Short Version: When I try to start Kubuntu it freezes when it starts to load the desktop (a.k.a X server right?). It loads up the splash screen and it freezes on the third icon (the globe looking thing). I click on the icon after it freezes and it displays a message that stated that it had no write access to home/studly/.ICauthority. Longer Version: I just finished installing...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
