It's all about personal preferences and specialisations . You only need one, but then you only really need one programming language or one word processor. But there are many, because some people find one thing more important and others prefer another thing. The syntax is similar in most shells, but there are differences because of these preferences and specialisations .

This is really a comment on "Python in Systems Administration: Part I -- Better Scripting" http://www.samag.com/documents/s=8964/sam0312a/0312a.htm by Cameron Laird. Reading the article, although I am a fan of Python, I kinda take issue with the example given. It doesn't seem to fit with the concept of 'many smaller utilities doing one thing well, connected via pipes' If I had the task of writing a Unix utility to match the GUI Python

Hello, Since DB2 Cluster Certification Guide is out of print and I cannot seem to get my hands on a copy, is there a publication that would give me a "cookbook" approach to setting up a cluster using Linux and multiple machines? I came across a couple of things, but they all assume one honking great AIX box with multiple SPs and that sort of thing.

I want to be able to do something like: myscript.py * -o outputfile and then have the shell expand the * as usual, perhaps to hundreds of filenames. But as far as I can see, getopt can only get one argument with each option. In the above case, there isn't even an option string before the *, but even if there was, I don't know how to get getopt to give me all the expanded filenames in an option.

I'm interested in trying out shells other than IDLE, and I found PyShell, but I'm not sure how to get it exactly. Is there a way to get it without installing wxPython, or is it a part of it? I can't find much reference to it in any of the manuals at wxpython.org (except for a brief description of what it is, but not *where* it is or how to use it). Thanks. And if there are other shells that are newer/better, I'd appreciate a...

Is there any way to read multiple files (more than 1000 files) and then write into one single output file using C? Right now in my program, I have a loop which asks for the filename and writes into the output file but this is tedious. Imagine typing 1000 filenames...is there a efficient way to do this?? Thanks

I'm having some trouble implementing the handling of multiple pipes in a shell I'm writing. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction because I really cant see where I'm going wrong. Its supposed to work as follows: main shell forks off a child shell, the child shell sets up the pipes and forks off n-1 other shells (where n is the total number of commands). Each child shell sets its pipe file descriptors then execs to...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
