transferring from linux to unix

111 New Member
Hi the question that i have is probably really simple.
but i'm more used to a windows environment.

basically, my current CMS (built in PHP) is built to run in a windows environment.

i was told that i need to test it on a linux box as it will soon be transferred over to a linux box. I managed to get php and mysql installed on the linux box, only to find out that the CMS is no longer going to be hosted on Linux, but unix.

I don't have a unix box to test on, but since Linux is a build from unix, am i right in assuming that if the CMS works on Linux it will also wotk on unix.

Never assume but it should be close if it doesn't. Linux is not a build from Unix but is Unix-like. One quick and easy way to find out is to install FreeBSD, which is a direct decendent from Unix. A quicker and easier install would be PC-BSD which would be more like Ubuntu.

I have an application that is written in php/mysql on a Linux platform and need to transfer hosts. This is a session based application and I don't know a lot about php/Linux/mysql, but can get by. I know windows/asp, etc. much more extensively. So, can I just move the whole thing over to a Windows server, upload the mysql backup database and change the settings for the db connection and have it work? Is there anything that would prevent...

You can compile anything you want. Redistribute anything you want. You can name the OS distribution your name burn CDs with it and make a donation to 100 schools. You can make a distribution boot from a memory stick. You can make your own filesystem, call it MyFS and be forever happy. You can call yourself Chief Software Architect. You don't have to sign NDA. It's called freedom. GNU Public License.

The war of the OSes was won a long time ago. Unix has always been, and will continue to be, the Server OS in the form of Linux. Microsoft struggled mightily to win that battle -- creating a poor man's DBMS, a broken email server and various other /application/ servers to try and crack the Internet and IS markets. In the case where they didn't spend their own money to get companies to

So, can anyone tell me which flavour of linux i should use, some say that Debian is more programmer friendly, or shold i use fedora, or Solaris. Linux is a free operating system that was created by Linus Torvalds when he was a student at the University of Helsinki in 1991. Torvalds started Linux by writing a kernel - the heart of the operating system - partly from scratch and partly by using publicly available software. Torvalds then released the system to his friends and to a community of "hackers" on the Internet and asked them to work with it and enhance it. It took off. ...

In most modern distributions of Linux and Unix (at least ones with graphical environments like KDE, Gnome or XFCE), you get to mount your partitions easily from the desktop. In some cases however, it isn't that easy. Note, that all of these commands have to be run in a terminal as root user. To open a terminal (sometimes called a console), either press ALT+F2 and type xterm (alternatives could be konsole or terminal) or press CRTL+ALT+F1 to...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
