Checkbox + css background imgs + toggle ?

This may be very noob question but didn't found help anywhere:

Could it be possible to have form checkboxes, everyone with different descriptive image laid out as a background near the box, via css and then, when user checks/unchecks it, the background changes. The "on" image could be same for all, but the "off" would be unique. Ok, maybe the background-img should be in the label element, not in the checkbox itself. But anyway, could someone help with the script please?

Use the style.backgroundImage property to change the image onclick.
