Adding a Website Icon to the clients Desktop

Nik
Hi everyone,

Is there anyway of letting the user click on a link or image, and
saving a shortcut icon to the users desktop?

Thanks

In short, no.

There is no function for this in any version of JavaScript, and
methods for adding to a browser's 'Favourites' or 'Links' list is
specific to each browser.

This would be a security breach. You would make a file on the clients
machine!

Tell the user to drag the address icon to the desktop.

Why would I want to allow you to clutter my desktop?

Ok. I want to settle this once and for all. After looking at the source for various, rather sizeable (but not all were so big) web sites that use icons that show up in the addressbar beside the address itself. I have a small problem that may be best solved by dragging and dropping a mail message to an icon. But I'm honestly not sure what the data will look like from different e-mail clients. Since most of my programming experience is something a user rarely sees, I'm not even sure where to start creating a test case. I would appreciate pointers...

I recently gave myself a scare because I was running an old version of my web site. Many changes are not possible to detect when running a test.
