I've been contemplating what the recommended usage of a "top of page" link should be? Should there only ever be one at the bottom of the page? Should they be sprinkled at various points on the page? Or should they be used at all? Lately, I've been leaning towards the last option because my thought is that most browsers have a method to make it back to the top of the page (home button, scroll bar, whatever). It seems I never use the...

"#define" can only be inside the global scope before main() function. "#if" can be tested after "#define" is executed. The problem is that "#define" can't be inside main() function. I do not wish to create multiple functions which they look almost identical in C++ source code. The C++ compiler should be able to compile one Test() function into two almost identical functions before they are translated into the machine language object. ...

I'm curious, what was the rationale for making a builtin type _Bool but then having #define true 1 #define false 0 in stdbool.h? That seems very odd that true and false don't have type _Bool. In particular I'm poking around with some language extensions to C and one of the most obvious extensions is overloading. Since "true" doesn't have type _Bool it makes overloading behavior with _Bool very odd. You'd think that at least it could be...

My front-end code manually links to the backend file. I was wondering what stops Access from linking to the system tables in the backend file. Is it just by virtue that they are hidden? This has recently come up because I've been playing around with converting my front end to A2003 format. At some point, I had a corruption issue with a system file MSStorage something. Access kept saying it couldn't find it. When I looked in the db...

Hello! Some time ago I discovered a script on php.net that uses a fopen handle on a .htaccess-protected directory to check the authorization of a user. The crucial Code is this: $handle = fopen("http://username:pw@domain.com/directory", "r"); (of course the username and password are variables entered by the user) I used this script to protect a admin-area for some time without any

You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
