Trouble with Form validation code

11 New Member
Hi. I'm having some trouble with the code I'm using to validate a form. The form is used to query a database and users can enter multiple search criteria separated by commas. Since search criteria varies, some fields may be left blank, however, I want to prevent an empty form from being submitted. I have written the code, but it's not working. I have changed it several times and now I'm just getting more and more confused. I'm new to javascript, so there could be a million syntax errors in here. The error that I am getting now is this:

"elements.numva rs.value" is null or not an object

I looked the error up and tried the fixes that were suggested, but still no luck. Here is the code for the javascript function:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. function Validate_Form(form) {
  2.    var checkvars = 0;
  3.    for (i = 1; i <= form.elements["numvars"].value; i++)
  4.    {
  5.       if (form.elements["vr" + i].checked == true)
  6.          checkvars++;
  7.    }
  8.    if (checkvars == 0)
  9.    {
  10.       alert("No variables have been selected.");
  11.       return (false);
  12.    }
  13. document.queryf.submit();
  14.    }
And here is the code for the form tag:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. <form NAME="queryf" action="submit_query.asp" method="post" onsubmit="javascript:return Validate_Form(this);">
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Make sure that the "numvars" element exist on the form and it has a value property.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I checked the form for the numvars value, and it's not in the form, so that explains the error. I must have deleted it in the course of cutting and pasting snippets of code here and there.

I think I am going to start the whole thing from scratch and see how it goes. I found a good beginner's article on form validation, so I'll go through that and see if I can get this to work properly.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi, after coding for days on stupid form validations - Like: strings (min / max length), numbers(min / max value), money(min / max value), postcodes(min / max value), telefon numbers, email adresses and so on. I thought it might be a better way to programm an automated, dynamic form validation that works for all kinds of fields, shows the necessary error messages and highlights the coresponding form fields.

I have a form on a webpage and want to use JavaScript validation for the form fields. I have searched the web for form validation scripts and have come up with scripts that only validate individual fields, such as an "Email Validation Script" or a "Phone Validation Script". Is it ok to put all these scripts on page as they are or should they be joined in some way together to be one script? I'm a total JavaScript newbie and am completely...

Hi all, I am doing a project for university whereby i have to implement a simple database related to a frozen foods company. I am having some trouble though creating a validation rule for one of my fields. I have a table called "Product" and two of the fields included in this table are "Cost Price" and "Retail Price". I need to create a validation rule so that the Cost Price is always less than the Retail Price. I have tried...

Hello all! As embarrassing as it is to admit this, I've been designing db driven websites using javascript and vbscript for about 6-7 years now, and I am *horrible* at form validation. To be honest I usually hire someone to do it for me, grab predone scripts and kind of hack out the parts that I need, or just do very minimal validation (e.g. this is numeric, this is alpha-numeric, etc.)

Hi, I have a form for uploading documents and inserting the data into a mysql db. I would like to validate the form. I have tried a couple of Javascript form validation functions, but it appears that the data goes straight to the processing page, rather than the javascript seeing if data is missing and popping up an alert. I thought it may be because much of the form is populated with data from the db (lists, etc.), but when I leave...

Hi, I am trying to use XMLHttpRequest to do server side validation. I have several fields on a form and a submit button. The submit button has an event assocated with it when clicked. The javascript method will do the form validation for each field one by one. For each field, an XMLHttpRequst will be made to a PHP file and get the return, either set an error field (<span>'s innerHTML) or leave it empty. Then I'll check the error field...

Hello, I'm using tiny MCE plugin on my oscommerce and it is inserting my website URL when I use insert image function in the emails. The goal is: Make it send the email with the URL http://mghospedagem.com/images/controlpanel.jpg instead of http://mghospedagem.comhttp://mghospedagem.com/images/controlpanel.jpg As u see, there's the website URL before the image URL.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
