How to use variables in document.evalua te()

Hi all:
I met a problem when using document.evalua te() to get text content
using XPath,
my code is as follows:

nodes = document.evalua te("/html/body/div/ul[1]/li[5]", document,
null,XPathResul t. UNORDERED_NODE_ SNAPSHOT_TYPE , null);

in the XPath expression "/html/body/div/ul[1]/li[5]", I need to
traverse from li[1] to li[5],
so I should use a variable here , like this:

for (index =1; index<6; i++)
{
nodes = document.evalua te("/html/body/div/ul[1]/li[index]", ....);
// the variable index here is invalid!
}
my question is: How to use the variable in XPath expression?
appreciate your help!

Hi

You may be confusing this with something like PHP which does allow you
to reference a variable within a string literal.

In JavaScript it should be

nodes = document.evalua te("/html/body/div/ul[1]/li[" + index+ "]",
.....);

Regards

Julian

Hi, can anybody put forward a sensible argument javascript's behaviour of creating a new global variable whenever I assign to a previously undeclared variable. I can't beleive this is just for the sake of convenience (surely we learned this much from basic). here's my proposal: all "global" (document scope) variables must be declared by 'var' outside a function block.

Dear Experts: Suppose I have global variables: x1, x2, x3 and I have a function that needs to assign a value to a new global variable x4 something like function foo () { count = 0;

I'm learning Javascript. I downloaded a script for study. Please tell me how the variable "loop" can have scope in the first function when it is altered in the second function? It is not defined in global space, therefore it is not a global variable, yes? Even if it was global, how would it get from one function to another? In PHP variables are copied by value. Are they copied by reference in Javascript? <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">

http://www.JavascriptToolbox.com/bestpractices/ I started writing this up as a guide for some people who were looking for general tips on how to do things the 'right way' with Javascript. Their code was littered with document.all and eval, for example, and I wanted to create a practical list of best practices that they could easily put to use. The above URL is version 1.0 (draft) that resulted. IMO, it is not a replacement for the FAQ,...

In Firefox 1.5 (this question is Mozilla specific as I am using greasemonkey) I would like to be able to use document.evaluate to return the first TD entry that shows ^\s*MySearchText\s*$. As I understand it, xpath doesn't yet have regular expressions so I thought to do: function findNode (srch) { var node; var expr="//td"; var RE = new RegExp("\\s*" + srch + "\\s*$");

Hi all: when I use XPather(a firefox extension) to evaluate the expression: "/html/body/table/tbody/tr/td/table/tbody/tr/td/div/ul/li" it tells me there are 7 matching Nodes. but when I use the following code to do the same thing: nodes = document.evaluate("/html/body/table/tbody/tr/td/table/tbody/tr/td/div/ul/li", document, null,XPathResult. Is there a way to tell whether accessing a variable will result in an "Undefined variable" E_NOTICE? isset() almost does this, but it also returns false if a variable is set to null: $SetNonNull = 0; $SetNull = null; var_dump(isset($SetNonNull)); // bool(true) $Junk = $SetNonNull; // No error, as predicted by isset(). var_dump(isset($NotSet)); // bool(false)

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
