beginner's question

As a beginner in javascript I had a question. I was reading FAQ and posts
here.

I became very unhappy: Obviously this group is mainly for wise, pedantic,
unkind etc people, who already know everything about javascript, and want
to prove that to everyone in a very harsh way?

Therefore, I skip the question, and we can go directly to the following
posts:
'You are dumb'
'Go away'
'I know everyting and you know nothing'
'Your language is incorrect'
'You are %badvariable%'
' You are %i%, %j% %k%, where i, j, k are correct but unfriendly
expressions'
....
repeat until false ;

Sigh.

Now, have we saved a lot of time doing like this?

There are some here as with many Newsgroups that seem to have a 'superior'
yet infact 'inferior' view on just about everyone else, but just ignore
those and appreciate the useful advice you'll get from the majority.

I think the general problem is that although, yes, some people here are
experienced and take a 'high and mighty' approach sometimes, a lot of
people don't take the time to research what they are trying to do,
first.

Whenever I start a new programming endeavor, I go for:

1. online manuals / faq's such as w3schools.com, or the languages'
documentation page (such as php.net for php). Granted I personally
haven't found an authoritative source on javascript on the internet, so
that brings me to #3.

2. Searching the internet. I've seen too many posts of 'how do I do
.....?' followed with a reponse that is merely a link to a google
search. Learning to search well can save a lot of time. Especially when
you don't have to wait for people to reply to a post in a forum.

3. Good books. When I decided to get into javascript, the first thing I
did was buy "JavaScript : The Definitive Guide, 4th Edition" by
O'Reilly. Yes, the books can cost a bit but I think they can be
valuable most of the time. Or try the library. University libraries are
better for finding updated technical books. I also have a copy of the
Javascript 'pocket edition' by O'Reilly which is good as a quick
reference for common functions, syntax, etc.

Avoid any book that simply rehashes what you can find on the internet,
and avoid any book that is just blindly filled with examples and then
says 'Go to it!'. And I try to get the newest edition of a book if the
language is rapidly changing with new versions, specifications, etc.

There's a plethora of knowledge out there and it is my understanding
that forums are best used for solving inexplicable bugs and discussing
vague ideas. Bottom line, please take responses with a grain of salt if
they have a tone of superiority.

I hear you bro' or sis'... that sort of thing irritates me too. Ignore
them and follow your course. They don't bug me online, I can always
return flame and that makes me feel better. I find that in person, they
don't do that as much.

One such incident that was where I actually ran into the idiot who was,
as you say, "pedantic". I won't go over the details of how I ran into
him but it was at a trade show. Kismet really. But I did flare into him
in person and he wasn't as motivated to condescend in person.
