Code indenting, formattnig

Some posters have been critical of the lack of formatting in some
posts. Pleae be aware that posting through the Google group's
web interface removes *all* leading white space - tabs, spaces, the
lot.

It also wraps at very short line lengths, making it something of a
chore to use.

Please allow some leeway for those posting via the web interface,
for some there is no option. I've been forced to ditch my normal
newsreader due to ISP server issues and use this interface, so I
can report first hand that whilst it looks pretty, the lack of
support for indenting and stupid line-wrap length means it sux.

For anyone using the interface, please use the "preview" option to
ensure your posts look as good as possible before sending. And
if anyone has some tips on how to insert proper blocking of code,
through the web UI, please post!!

See http://news.individual.net/
Free NNTP access after a registering. No hitch.

No. You should choose a service that gives proper, standards-compliant
results if you are going to presume to give advice. More can be
forgiven of mere questioners.

I doubt that. Your ISP should not be preventing you from using
news.individual .net (IIRC the address).

Don't use it. Use in preference proper NNTP news software and a proper
NNTP news server; or, failing that, use a better-designed Web-based
system. Don't accept bad service.

But, if it is as you describe, there is an easy and obvious solution;
insert some character, or characters, at the beginning of every non-
empty code line. A single character will suffice, and is easily removed
by one executing your code; or you could use '//', which makes your code
acceptable to any browser <G> and easy to test incrementally by
selective // removal; or you could use '/**/'.

How do you keep Python code properly indented as you modify it? I use an Emacs-type editor that has a Python mode, so the initial indenting is easy. If I later want to put a 'for' loop (or an 'if' statement) around a bunch of code, I find myself going through the body of the loop, manually re-indenting to keep the nested loops correct. There should be a better way. I think that having a 'for' loop end with a matching 'next' statement,...

Appreciate any ideas about what might be happening with these pages in IE5.2 Mac. In summary the 2nd paragraph or list item is indenting to the right. paragraphs of list items after the 2nd don't indent further, they just stay in line with the 2nd. Also seems to be affecting headings (h2 etc) and images. Seems to be a problem specific to this browser.

Sometime ago on the comp.lang.c, I saw a teacher's post asking why C compilers produce so many error messages as soon as a closing bracket is missing. The response was simply because the compiler can't tell where a bracket is missing.... a few weeks have past, I requested a feature for the delphi ide/editor "automatic identation of code in begin/end statements etc" and today when I woke up I suddenly released a very simple solution for this...

I found this code in a project: StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); sb.Append("SELECT * FROM SomeTable") .Append("WHERE SomeField = SomeValue") .Append("ORDER BY etc etc etc") at first I thought it was using a using statement but it's not. It works because sb.Append returns an instance of itself. I'd be interested to hear what everyone thinks of it.

Hi group, I want to indent existing XML files so they are more readable (at least to me). At this moment I'm looking at the XML files OpenOffice.org's Writer application produces in it's zipped "SXW" format (and they're one line, probably to save space, which I find hard to read). At first I thought I was going to do it with sed/awk or something like that, but then I remembered the xsl:output element with the indent attribute of XSL and...

Tabs versus Spaces in Source Code Xah Lee, 2006-05-13 In coding a computer program, there's often the choices of tabs or spaces for code indentation. There is a large amount of confusion about which is better. It has become what's known as “religious war” — a heated fight over trivia. In this essay, i like to explain what is the situation behind it, and which is proper.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
