Detecting devices (USB, Firewire) in a java application

2 New Member
Hi all,

I hava java application that wants to receive windows events when a device like an USB or Firewire is plugged in. I know how to do this natively in C++ where I can register a window to receive device change events. I'm assuming I'd have to use JNI to somehow get the events up to my java app, but I'm not sure where to start exactly. Any help/suggestions will be much appreciated.

Regards,
Tuism

Hi, I'm thinking about using a USB attached device for some data collection. I can use other languages to "talk" with it, but I'd prefer a Java solution. Does anybody have any experience with USB and Java and could point me to a starting point? Thanks. (Already know Java and apologize if I'm overlooking the obvious.)

I'm working on an application (OEM) using C# that utilizes input from a keyboard, and USB Barcode Scanner. The scanner is a HID Keyboard device, and input from it is sent to the system as if it were a keyboard. I need to be able to identify input from the scanner and keyboard independently. I've looked at DirectX.DirectInput, and using user32.dll to hook into the keyboard messages, but neither method seems to allow for identification of...

Hi All I need to write a program to read input from barcode scanner. The program is for a gym and needs to detect when a card is scanned regardless of which program is currently running ont he computer. e.g the operator might be typing a letter and a member swipes his card. I am convinced I need to write the card reader section as a Windows Service, so it is active always?

These days, many devices connect to the computer using USB interface. For example, my MP3 player and printer is connected through USB. I searched for 'USB' in the Object Browser but there was virtually no result. I could find only System.IO.Port and it didn't seem to related to USB. I want to get notifed when a USB mass storage device is connected. Is there any .NET support for this kind of operations or should I look for those tricky...

Hi, I'm wondering how I can scan the system for USB devices and read off the USB descriptors such as VID/PID/serial number in C? I have an external USB HDD that I wish to access, and I'm currently able to do so with DeviceIoControl by addressing it as PhysicalDriveX, which will return me information about the device, except it only does it for the attached fixed disk, rather than the USB device. Thanks!

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
