I currently have PostgreSQL 7.1 installed on a server with about 700
Mb of RAM.
I have many problems of speed with a database I created. For example,
it took almost 12 sec to run the query "select * from table" directly
from PostgreSQL, on a table with 4000 records and 60 fields ...
And the whole application built on this database is very very slow
(some pages take almost 20 seconds to load !)

Hello,
Is it normal for plain VACUUM on large table to degrade performance by over
9 times? My database becomes unusable when VACUUM runs. From reading
newsgroups, I thought VACUUM should only slow down by 10% to 15%. Other MVCC
databases like MySQL InnoDB can even VACUUM discretely (runs internally). Is
it my Linux system or is it PostgreSQL?
The database is mostly read-only. There are 133,000 rows and each row is
about 2.5kB in size...

I am looking for others who have built systems to scan documents, index
them and then make them accessible from an Access database. My
environment is a nonprofit with about 20-25 case workers who use
laptops. They have Access databases on their laptops and the data is
replicated.
The idea is that each case worker would scan their own documents,
either remotely or back at the office.

The ETL application loaded around 3000 rows in 14 seconds in a Development
database while it took 2 hours to load in a UAT database.
UAT db is partitioned.
Dev db is not partitioned.
the application looks for existing rows in the table...if they already
exist then it updates otherwise inserts them.
The table is pretty large, around 6.5 million rows.

I am setting up a photo website. I have decided to use PHP and MySQL.
I can load jpeg files into the table (medium blob, or even longtext)
and get the image(s) to display without a problem. I am using
chunk_split(data) and the base64_encode and base64_decode on the files.

Yikes! My database, which had been consistently 1 gig for a long time, went
from being 1 gig to 3 gigs overnight! Looking at the nightly backups, the
database increased on average about 5-15 MB per day, and was 1.06 GB on the
Thursday night backup. Then, with the Friday night backup, it was 2.95 GB,
and has stayed that way since!
I did a Shrink on the database, but that didn't help the situation.
