.NET or J2EE

Hey,

If I wanted to learn Web Development fast (within 6 months) what should
I focus on J2EE or .NET ?
I mean I am a Quality Assurance guy who has some Java experience, but
looking to get in the door as a Web developer, but kinda stuck in QA. It
seems to be a great demand for .Net developers out there now and that might
be growing.

If .Net, any books, references I should buy that would help me learn Web
development in .Net rather quickly ?.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Let's see - you're in a java newsgroup - and want a recommendation between
J2ee and .NET for Web development.
Look at your target employer - what does he use ? - Talk to his IT person.
What skillset are they looking for ?
If its .NET - look for another employer ;-)

But to learn within 6 months - first learn html - then PHP - you'll have
time to spare

Java will take longer - but its used on mainframes and - unix, linux, win,
mac - and AS/400 - & Websphere
..NET === MS will probably change everything by the time you learn the
current version.

..Net is and always will be, going in every direction and back again and
all at the same time. it's purpose is not to help the developer get
things done, it's purpose is to simply screw you up royally (microsoft
philosophy). spend time on that if you feel you need to beef up
propaganda on your resume but if your trying to actually accomplish
something get into j2ee.

".Net" is a poorly done re-write of J2EE

just as

"Longhorn" is a poorly done re-write of Linux

Disclaimer: I'm a Windows person (mostly Delphi) who made a brief
excursion into Java. Two years ago I landed a job in a company
migrating its ASP code to .NET, so Microsoft now owns my soul.

Despite MS's claims to the contrary, MS completely owns .NET. Yes,
you _could_ buy Borland's C# Builder or Delphi 8; you _could_ use a a
..net version of Eiffel or Ada or a dozen other languages with no
market share and no jobs. Realistically, you will develop using
VS.NET and your choice of VB, C#, or C++. Given your Java experience,
and MS's clear preferences, if you choose .net, I would recommend C#.
The odds are you can qualify for the Academic license; it's only $100.

IMHO, the problem with Java is that it's so fragmented. If you learn
J2EE using JBoss, your potential employer wants experience in WebLogic
or WebSphere. If you use Oracle's JDeveloper as your IDE, your
potential employer wants JBuilder or Eclipse. If you use MySql as a
back end, your employer may use Oracle or DB2. If you learn Struts as
your framework, your employer may use Velocity or Tea or Webworks or
Faces.

Yes, I recognize that this happens in the Windows world as well. But
in my experience it's considerably worse in the Java world.

Just my 2 cents.

Umm, maybe I'm being dense, but what are you talking about? How is it
relevent to my post (which you quoted in its entirety, adding only
this one line), or to the original question?

Well, thanks to you all.

I'm just looking for a way to get into a Web development role and it seems
the demand for .Net developers are at a all time high.
I was more curious on which avenue I should focus on if I want to get into
the field at entry-level role.

Right now I've been doing QA for over 8 years, but I do know Java. All these
employers want to see 1 - 2 years of real experience.
How do I get real experience if my day-to-day job is QA ? I only have
college experience and very little work experience.

Hi everyone, I'm currently studying for my Master's in Computer Science, and I will be working on my thesis this summer. I've been thinking about constructing a web services application for my thesis, as I've been interested in this technology, and I haven't had a chance to work with it in my last job. Is J2EE free or not?? I'm confused by Sun's web site. I've been to the sun web site and found downloads pages for J2SE and J2EE, but the J2EE page only shows updates. Does this mean that J2EE isn't free? I noticed a page in which I could request a license for J2EE, but I only see major companies listed as licensees. Lou Arnold

I would like to add SIP stack to J2EE application server. I know that JCA 1.5 allows doing such thing. But JCA 1.5 is part of J2EE 1.4. Currently the most J2EE vendors support J2EE 1.3. Can anybody share experience of integrating a new protocol stack into any J2EE application server?
