After many years of using LISP, I'm taking a class in Java and finding
the two roughly comparable in some ways and very different in other
ways. Each has a decent size library of useful utilities as a standard
portable part of the core language, the LISP package, and the java.lang
package, respectively. Both have big integers, although only LISP has
rationals as far as I can tell. Because CL supports keyword arguments,
it has a wider range...

Hello,
I'm starting to learn about java networking.
What I want to do is for now, just make a server that listens to connections
through a port, and accepts it's connections from the client.
I don't have that many connections about networking, so I don't know any
good book that gives a nice comprehensive introduction to java networking.

Hi
does anybody know a tool that converts Java-Code to
C++? I need a very simple converter that does NOT need to
cover Threading, Swing, Exceptions, Reflection, RMI,
Security, Networking and most of java.util (except LinkedList).
It also does not need to cover garbage collection (new is not allowed
in the java code that should be converted).
TIA

I think you would agree with me that a C compiler that directly
produces Java Byte Code to be run on any JVM is something that is
missing to software programmers so far. With such a tool one could
stay with C and still be able to produce Java byte code for
platform independent apps. Also, old programs (with some tweaking)
could be re-compiled and ported to the JVM.
We have been developing such a tool over the last 2 years and currently...

No, I'm not a troll, just angry. I just started learning
C++, and find it extremely lacking compared to Java.
For example, I had to write my own functions to do something
as simple as a case insensitive string comparison, and a
substring search. Then I found that there are no networking
classes to speak of (except sockets). After I thought about
it, C++ really pales by comparison. Java has a rich set of
networking classes, regular...

I'm posting a new message regarding this subject,
since the one posted previously is getting rather
large. I just received the June 2005 issue of
Dr. Dobb's Journal, and it contains an article
titled "The Technical Report On C++ Library
Extensions". After debating this issue with
various group members, all I can say is:
I Win!!! (Just kidding)
Anyway, here are a couple of quotes from the article,

I've been programming Python for a couple of years now. Now I'm
looking to move on to either C++ or Java, but I'm not sure which.
Which one do you think will be a better transition for a Python
programmer? Which one will educate me the best?

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...
