Stability of Threads

I am a newbie Java programmer and am just learning about threads. A
colleague if mine once told me that 'threads were unsafe'. I didn't
bother to ask him why because at the time I didn't know what threads
were! Do threads in Java pose any risks? Is there any validity to his
statement? Why?

Thanks much,
Dan

Java has a very powerful and robust threading model, Dan. I think your
friend was referring to the ways the multiple threads can access
objects/data during application runtime. To be a credible Java programmer
using threads, you need to understand the concept of syncronization and why
it is used. The Java site has a pretty good tutorial on Threads and their
life-cycle. I would suggest reading up on the topic, that's how I learned
about it. ;)

Hey, We are in the process of rewriting our internal management system (which was written in PHP4), and figured this would be a good time to migrate to PHP5 to get all the OO goodness it has to offer :) I am running php 5.0.3 on apache 1.3.something under slackware linux. Unfortunately I frequently get segfaults from php scripts, and they are not even scripts that do anything fancy or special. For example, in one script i got a...

Hi all, I have a server from which keeping clients off for maintenance is difficult. They all have VPN connections and can be online any time they want, and uptime as always is important. Now I need to run dbcc shrinkdatabase, checkdb and of course checkpoint right before backups, and when the log seems to grow. I just tried dbcc checkdb on my home computer and apparently its really io and CPU intensive on this dual P3. Can users be...

Looking at http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/db2/linux/validate/ it told us that db2 v8.1 is not validated yet for suse90 professional ed. Do you have any experience regarding the stability of db2 on that or other up to date linux platforms ? Has anyone using that configuration made a call to the db2 support ? Does the support appease that questions ? Best regards.

This is a general question about back ends. Using in the scenario of a single user machine or *possibly* 2 networked machines. Therefore using SQL Server is not really an option. I need to write a database that keeps track of someone's sales (eg: jewellery shop). There would be tables with around 20000 records that would keep track of the stock items (wouldn't change much). The bulk of the work is based on sales made which of...

Hi all, We've just migrated to IIS 6.0 / Windows Server 2003. We are now experiencing some stability problem what we did not experience in IIS 5.0 / Windows 2000 Server. Our ASP.NET application is running in a web-farm environment of multiple web servers. We have been using "Performance Monitor" to monitor the "Requests in Application Queue" counter of "ASP.NET Apps v.1.1.4322" object. We have found the following pattern.

I'd be pinging for 24 hours at 3 second intervals. Are there any IP addresses out there that exist just for pinging, if not, would it be considered rude to pick a major site such a google? Or - let me back up here - is there some other, better way to monitor internet connection stability using .Net? Bob

Is there a way to find all the thread names that are running in a project? For example, if I have 5 threads T1, T2, T3, T4, T5...and T2, T4, and T5 are running...I want to be able to know that T2, T4 and T5 are already running. Thanks, Darian

Hi all, At work I'm considering proposing a solution for our distributed processing system (a web based shopping cart that feeds an actual printing production line) based on Pyro. I've done some minor experiments with this and Pyro looks interesting and like a good implementation of what I want. I've got a couple of questions though: 1) Has anyone had any experience with Pyro, and if so, have you had any stability, or memory use...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
