Guggenheim web site?

AES
Would anyone want to voice any opinions on this web site:

It's apparently the home page of the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

When it first opens you get some "artsy" animation in the window, but no
useful information--

And then it tells you that you have to reach over and drag the primary
navigation information display out of the right side of the browser
window--

And when you pull this hidden section out, it comes out with the
navigation text in it rotated so it all runs vertically downward on the
screen--

(At least this is how it works for me in Netscape 7 under OS X.)

And then other text begins to appear running __upward__ on the left side
of the screen--

Is this supposed to be artists at play? Or artists being difficult?
Or my browser not working right? Or what . . . ?

All of the above?! It works identically for me in Moz 1.7.3 and Opera 7.x
so I presume that it's intentional. Of course, so was the <blink> tag ...

I don't see anything to object to about the site, design-wise [1],
although I suspect you're objecting 'cos it's not overly functional, which
it isn't, but what art is? Not everyone's cup of tea but the tone of it
suggests experimentation and you'd have to say they probably intented it
just the way it is. You can say you don't like it, but you're in a world
of pain if you ever try and say art is *bad*. This site is the cyber
equivalent of a sheep in formaldehyde ... ;-)

You're lucky, I get a blank window.

Let's see:

A useful example of how *not* to produce a web page.
When it first opens you get some "artsy" animation in the window,

*You* might, but they evidently made no provisions whatsoever for
web-compatible clients in general.

Trying to describe all that is wrong with that web site is like trying
to describe a major train wreck in detail. You just don't know where
to start and you'd probably never finish.

I cannot tell you what I think of the site, because I cannot access it.
I cannot/will not use a flash plugin, so the home page of the site is
neither "artsy" nor useful, as I see it.

Party like it's 1999

Their home pages are over here.
http://guggenheim.org

Which are implemented in badly done inaccessible HTML, rather than
really badly-done, very inaccessible Flash.

The Guggenheim websites have been unusable crap for years. I saw one of
their head web honchos getting a roasting over this at a museums conf. a
few years ago and they were very defensive about it. The usual
arts-speak bollocks to try and justify it on aesthetic grounds, rather
than realising it's a communication medium and so needs to communicate.
it seems they still haven't improved matters.

The sad thing is not that this site is so poor, but that someone
_thinks_ it's so good. They worked hard to make this, just in the wrong
direction.
