How to open a document link (files ex .doc .ppt etc.) with it's application

Sorry for asking a simple and easily find-able Q.

How to open a document link with it's application?
Say i have link for .ppt file and i want to open it with MS Power point.
By default it opens inside IE (the setting of IE does this).

Is it possible to do it or the setting of browser will overwrite the HTML code?

If the answer is easy to find, why do you ask here?
How to open a document link with it's application?
That is the business of the visitor and his settings. You have no
control over that. Serve the document with it's correct MIME type in
order for the visitor's browser to make the best decision it can make.

For a powerpoint file that would be application/vnd.ms-powerpoint

It may be that your server already serves the file with the right MIME
type for your file. Give us a URL so we can check that for you. Then we
can also tell you what to do if it is the incorrect MIME type.

Not in my browser. Not is a lot of other people's browsers either.

To sum it up, you cannot do that; and what you can do to make browsers
decide what to do with the file is not a HTML issue, but a server
settings issue.

Hi, For the last couple of releases of a product we're developing we've been running to very wierd behavior from IE and our ASP.NET web application which serves up various types of files and I'm getting very frustrated in trying to solve it! We content we are serving up is potentially sensitive and therefore we DO NOT want it cached on the remote client (IE) beyond the lifetime of the application rendering it (IE, Powerpoint, Word...

Hi, Can someone suggest the best technique / method of opening a Word ( or any other ) Document from an SQL BLOB ? I have the process of saving and retrieveing the file from an SQL Binary field working fine, but the user 'saves' the file from the Binary field to a binary disk file and can then open it. It would be better for them to be able to just open the file directly for viewing etc. I can 'trigger' a load for the file myself, but...

Hello All, Does anyone know of a method to automatically detect if a file is corrupted ? Due to a failed backup process a number of files were corrupted. The files are mostly .xls, .doc, .pdf. When you try to open the file, a dialog box opens stating that the file cannot be opened. I need to log which files wont open properly, and I'm hoping there is a way to automate the process.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
