If you have an old website up and you want to replace it with totally
different content, how do you purge the old website files that are
still lingering on the host server taking up space? I find that when I
put up a different site at the same address, it shows the old files
still being there adding to the cumulative amount of space being used.

Why don't you, well... delete the files?

Any FTP program ought to be able to delete the files. If for some reason
they're unindexed but still taking space, I'd contact the host and request
they erase all your space. Then you can re-upload everything to a truly
empty directory.
if you can execute commands on the host, (and it's a unix box) try this in
your root directory
rm -rf *

I have been hosting a website on the same server for roughly 2 years.
The entire site is based on a group of PHP scripts. Today, without
changing a thing, the server stopped recognizing all PHP keywords and
syntax. When I use firefox, the page simply displays a text/plain
version of my source code. When I use IE, the page loads as text/html,

in the home directory I put .htaccess with "register_globals 0".
Obviously, all php-files from this directory will not take variables
from the address line. But, as far as I understand, the .htaccess
files influences on all files in the subdirectories so that they also
