How to Q: Uncompressing ~400K files on Apache Server

Hello All,

I have ~400K html files on my local XP machine and I’d like to
compress the files, upload them onto my host (apache - pair.com) and
uncompress them there.

I’ve done this with less files (~10K) before – using ssh, putty and
unzip command. I seem not to be able to use the same method as ZIP
format will not accept such a large number of files.

Any suggestions on what options I have?

Split the files (10x40K or so) or try another packer like 7zip.

Your options will depend on what your host allows. I am on Unix/Linux/
Apache. My host provides easy to use compression for zip, gzip, and
bzip2. It also provides decompression for these and some other
compressed files you wish to upload. Gzip is a favorite on Apache
servers. The program 7-zip as suggested to you will allow use of these
formats and more on your computer. It is free and can be downloaded at
http://www.7-zip.org/ .

Some of the better ftp agents also may help. I use CuteFTP7 Pro. For
instance you may have a folder that contains a huge number of files,
and you are tempted to zip it to avoid having to upload many files.
When this does not work for whatever reason, you can open the folder
you want to upload and highlight blocks of files that are not too
excessive. Then you just select where on the server you want to upload
the files on another pane of the FTP agent. You hit the upload button
and you may leave and do something else. The FTP agent automatically
uploads all of the files you have highlighted and uploads two files at
once when the server is not too busy and allows multiple connections.
The FTP agent reconnects when the connection is broken, and it takes a
fairly bad problem for it to give up uploading. If it does have a
problem, you at least have some of the files you highlighted uploaded
and do not have to start all over.

Also worth noting is your isp. Even for the fastest DSL and cable
connections, upload usually is much slower than download. Some isps
have a time limit at which the disconnect from you server. If you have
a huge file, it might not be able to upload within this time limit no
matter if the file is zipped or not.

This issue doesn't seem to have anything to do with PHP, but there are
other compression algorithms available besides ZIP, such as gzip or
bzip2 (both available on *nix).

Why? ssh will compress on the fly.

not by default, though.

Otherwise, I agree. Just use WinSCP (or similar), configure it to use
compression.
