Grey Text

Hey,

How do you feel about using grey text for copy? I love grey for its neutral
presence and ability to downplay something and give a clear and crisp look
to the overall design of a site but at the same time, it's hard to read or
take notice of. One to some words seem to be OK but blocks of grey text
seem to be difficult to read and I have 20/20 eyesight.

I have seen a few upscale home designer sites using this technique. i.e.
martha stewart or the pottery barn.

Thoughts?

I like grey text, when done in appropriate design setting. Obviously, if
you go too grey it gets hard to read...but done in a decent shade, it can
make a site look really classy.

I've used it twice on sites I designed...one was for an upscale doll
'hospital' and one was for a flower shop.

I like grey text -- sometimes black is just too *hard*, in contrast to the
rest of the design. Just be careful you don't go too light. I like 666666
and 333333.

Check out http://www.juicystudio.com/services/colourcontrast.asp - it sets
some good guidelines for color and background contrast. According to their
guidelines, you need a grey of #585858 or lower to be accessible on a white
background, amd #a7a7a7 on black.

Awesome, that's exactly what I needed/wanted to know!!!! merci! I really
think #666666 is best to describe a picture or words which need to be
dehighlighted. I think #666666 is still readable but in large quantities,
such as blocks of copy, it can get tiresome on my eyes.

It seems as if the #585858 and #a7a7a7 is the bare minimum recommendations
as per W3C. Great link - thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Isabelle

That link was brought to me by this accessibility taskbar for IE -
http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/resources/toolbar/ - anyone designing for IE
viewers ought to download and install this. That link was posted about a
week ago in c.i.w.a.h.

oh! :) I see it now. I'm still thankful that you pointed me in the exact
direction I needed to go. I may have missed it.

I tell you, I'm such a geek. I must have raved about this toolbar for about
2 hours while my partner (who is also a geek) rolled his eyes about!
haha....

Definately one of the best links I was introduced to this week. It can get
really difficult to keep all the tools at our fingertips and this toolbar
makes things go *that more smoothly*, plus I found a few new things.

Cheers,

Isabelle

I use a label to write some help-text in a web-form. I don't want the user to be able to click in this field so I have disabled it, enable = false. The text color turns grey. I use a cssclass with another color and want it to remain blue, not grey. How do I avoid this? regards reidarT

The thin grey line that goes across the editor to mark off the sub\functions\regions from one another, is there a way to turn it off? I was considering using an underscore for my private member variables, but with the grey line, it obscures it (on the last one).

Hi, I was wondering, how to make a site grey out, something like this: http://www.lancome-usa.com/makeup/foundations.aspx if you put your mouse over a shade like 'Absolute Pearl 05' you'll get a 'QuickShop' button, click that and a popup comes up, causing the site behind it to grey out. I'd like to try something like that for my personal site, but not sure how it's done. Thanks.

I'm trying to implement bottom-to-top vertical text using CSS attributes in IE : writing-mode: tb-rl; filter: flipv fliph; But I have encountered the following: the text is displayed with a grey shadow (instead of anti-alias). It seems that the problem is caused by the "filter:flip" attribute. Does anyone have a work around? (If I write the same text without the "filter" attribute, the grey shadow disappears but my text...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...
